Everybody`s derivitive.
The classical composer Busoni once said"There is no new."
It`s seems originality is hard to find,but I think what J was drawing from,he evolved it into his own style-Sabbath,Zeppelin,Hendrix,Ramones,Minor Threat,Wipers,Stooges,MC5,VU,Neil Young,Meat Puppets,Sonic Youth,etc.J took all that stuff and developed something new I think.Listen to the amount of Indie bands out there that use J`s melodies and guitar chords;or guitar solos,J introduced guitar solos in the punk/indie/alt world.There is so many bands that use Dinosaur reference points,like Eric`s Trip,Swervedriver,Afghan Whigs,Teenage Fanclub,Bettie Serveert,Rein Sanction,Ripe,etc.
SY`s Steve Shelley said that Thurston and Lee learned alot from J,and SY was recording before Dinosaur was.Hey,
I agree with Salamiguy, influenced yes but definitely evolved into his own unique style of sounds… some of the coolest I have heard definitely. Really is a shame when people can’t see or hear past those influences and just appreciate the sounds.
Lots of bands have been influenced by Dinosaur/J …the list Salamiguy gave is a great one. They all definitely show the influence of J and various other sounds….Swervedriver were originally called Shake Appeal one of my fav Stooges songs…but those are just influences the personal spin they put on their sounds makes it all new again…and very cool. Sad when people just write bands off as carbon copies…their loss though.

Yeah, I agree with you two. Sure, J. was influenced, but it’s not as though he’s rehashing other people’s sound. Take Green Day for example, they were very derivitive, I suppose. Not an original musical thought in their head. J. though made his own style and has had people derive their music from him.

I don’t think I would classify J. as "derivitive" either. Yes, everybody making music is, in some sense, derivitive, but relative to other musicians/bands, not at all. When I hear J., guitar or singing…the makeup of the song….you can tell it’s him. In a sense, J. is like Willie Nelson. Nobody in the world sounds like them…..singing, guitar or songwriting.

…that Dinosaur Junior was highly derivitive. After looking this up, I get the idea that he means that their musical stylings are not overly original but are heavily endowed in other musicians roots. I see influences, but does anyone think J.’s music actually owes so much to previous musicians work that it can be called derivitive? Thoughts? [img]images/smiles/converted/confused.gif[/img]

If someone says that Dinosaur Jr. sound highly derivitive, you have to put it in context, into perspective. First I disagree with Salamiguy, that here is nothing new (new sounds, new images, whatever). People already said that 200 years ago and no-one is going to deny that we had something new in the meantime. It´s usually people that can´t think of anything original who give this as an exuse for their plagiatism. However, music in this day and age (with the countless revivals, sampling and what not) is more derivitive than it used to be.
Of course in some ways J. is highly original (the voice for a start) but is that obvious to the untrained ear?! Since he is so strongly influenced by the 70s, I guess for some people it might seem derivitive (sounds almost familiar after I`ve used it three times). I mean, it´s not really radical stuff he´s doing
(Well, apart from the Neil Young cover). Like when we first heard Hip Hop or Tekkno.
But hey, for everything there is a season. Don´t let it spoil your enjoyment. Can´t come up with something new all the time.

I still stick to lou when i have a go at the bass, i stick to murph when i play drums, except for j, i learned his songs on guitar and went on from there, but dino´s influence has been immense [img]images/smiles/converted/biggrin.gif[/img]I think J just listened to a lot of punk rock, harcore, and black sabbath and ended up making music that was more personal and emotional and different that any of his influences. I think J was one of the first if not the first people to write indie rock songs about girls and personal feelings but now 80% of indie, punk, or emo bands are writing songs like his. dig.
