J said to me when I asked his opinion on what kinda gear to buy if you don’t have a lot of money, he said: "Maybe you should buy a Music Man amp..and a Gibson Melody Maker, they’re pretty cheap." He disclosed by stating wisely: "1959 is the best year for guitars and amps."
Now you’re maybe wondering is this Finnish eskimo outta his freakin mind. What are the local mushrooms he’s been eatin? hate to let you all down; I haven’t taken anything-the lines are from an interview I did with J Mascis in 1998. I guess it’s kinda unique in a way, since it’s only appeared in my very, very small fanzine ("Being Different")that has even smaller circulation. But maybe I’ll post it here on freakscene.net one day, translated to English so you won’t have to learn Finnish. It’s a bitch, lemme tell you

I might make a jazzmaster with some parts and get the neck sorted so its like a vintage. I was hoping you guy might help me with a few things:

what colour shall i paint it?
what pickups shall i put on it?
j says he never uses humbuckers so p90 would be my best bet

Don’t put P-90´s since they’re not Jazzmaster pickups. Jazzmaster has Jazzmaster pickups; they’re bigger and flatter than P90’s. I suggest you use them.

Hey!

You can get a non fender jazzmaster type wammy bar though Stewart Macdonald’s guitar supply http://stewmac.com Melody makers are kind of dippy looking but I think it might look a little better with that nice chrome wammy bar hardware on there. Some tell me that a Jazzmaster type wammy does not work well. But they do look cool.

Maybe this idea would work better with a les paul jr or a Les Paul copy… I never really liked the way a Les Paul looked. But the genuine article is too expensive to mess with.
