I’ve been listening to J Mascis’ music for a long long time now, and I have to say that Free So Free is easily the best album he’s produced in years. It’s like he’s thrown himself back into the wailing guitar full-tilt. New rock albums rarely make me sit down and take notice, but this one does. The leads off the title track make me want to drop everything I’m doing, sit down, and crank my stereo all the way. J’s still got it. Keep making records, I’ll keep buyin’ ’em. This album’s even inspired me to pick up the guitar again. Mascis Rules!

I like the sound mix on the album. the drums sound very good. The distorted riffin´in the opening track, Freedom, is breathtaking. The fat bass-sound on Tell the Truth… Its´ punishing tone make me believe that Gene Simmons has visited J´s studio to lay down the bass-track.
Mascis voice is nice to hear in front of the picture.
the whole production seems to be more wide and open than More Light. good production opens the door for new listeners.

Have you heard the bassline on No Way ?
        It´s neat!

…I finally found my way to a record store cool enough to have the new album. It didn’t dissapoint to say the least. I agree with the sound mix being amazing. There is nothing better than turning up J. I dig it more than More Light, but that might just be the new aspect. It won’t be leaving my stereo for quite a while…

Thanks for the welcome. I’ve never been way into the "fan BBS," but the new album’s changed my mind. Agreed, More Light probably isn’t J’s best album, although it does have Bob Pollard on it. Gotta admit though, having two of my favorite musicians on the same disk wasn’t as good as I’d hoped. Their styles just don’t mesh that well…

I agree. Bob and J have very different styles. But, I can’t help but move my booty when Sameday is playing. That song is in my Top 10 list with "The Lung" and "Forget the Swan".

I don’t think I could make a choice between the two albums. I think Free for good moods and Light for "F**k You. I am drinking alone tonight".

                Does that make sense?

I agree Dinodrew. The 2 albums have different mood themes to them. I don’t know if I can say Free so Free is good for happy times, but the songs seem to have an uplifting effect even if the lyrics don’t. My point being is that both albums are great in their own way.

I agree with dinodrew as well, I couldn’t do without either of the discs.

Thank you everyone for agreeing with me.

"Set Us Free" has become "Sameday" for me. I sing so loud that I’ve narrowly avoided several accidents. (from second verse) "…thankful my heart aches…"

                      Set me free, baby!

I dunno, if I had to pick between Light and Free, it would be Free all the way. But yeah, Sameday is a good one, and Does the Kiss Fit is my favorite on the album. I’m just a sucker for the Mellotron…if that’s even what it is.

i think sameday is one of the best songs he ever did !
free so free is a very good album, dunno if i can say it’s his best though…

but my fave on this one is free so free :D

I hope I’ll never have to really decide which album I think is better, More Light and Free so Free (to say nothing of Dino ) but if I had to decide, I think of J’s solo albums it would be FsF – although I totally agree, that it depends on the particular mood I’m in, too :P

Oh My, I Saw The Light today

I finally like his new album
I think I have to see him acoustic more often :)

All the tracks are really beautiful
Say The Word is so amazing, I thought it was kinda boring
The Guitar Solo in that song is f*cking great

The album is very beautiful, sorry I didnot saw The Light earlier
                              I feel really ashamed

(I dont deserve to be a mod on this beautiful place :))

when I had Free so Free new, I listened to it over and over again….

Some of the tunes I liked immediately, but after some times listening to the entire record I just felt, that there is a magic with it as a whole…

wonderful, when more & more people find out about that great album :D great that you finally like it, too, King me, Baby :) :) :)

I think it should not be underrated just because it’s maybe a bit withdrawn in the first impression.
…Of course it helps very much to understand the new album to see one of those great acoustic shows  :D
