J. Mascis And The Fog
More Light
Shock
©2000 J.Mascis
A new J. Mascis record is like a letter from a great old friend – the achingly beautiful voice, levitating falsettos, slacker lyrics, fuzzed-up power chords, guitar histrionics and solos. After disbanding the highly influential Dinosaur Jr in 1997, J. has been shacked up at Bob’s Place, a basement studio named after his dog, in his Amherst house recording a solo debut album. The Fog appears to be pretty much a one-man band (Guided By Voices’ Bob Pollard sings on three songs) so thankfully it’s more of the same, but with fresher sounding songs than the Dino’s swansong. While falling short of Dino’s classics Green Mind and Where You Been?, Back Before You Go and Ammaring maintain his high standard, Waistin’ would have been a slacker classic if it were written 10 years ago, and the title track is as sonically brutal as anything he’s done. Welcome back J.
