      J Mascis & The Fog
      "Free So Free"
      *** out of ****

Singer-songwriter-guitarist J Mascis’ approach hasn’t changed much since the mid-80’s, when his Western Massachusetts band Dinosaur Jr helped write the alternative rock cookbook.

Those receipies remain intact on Mascis’ second post-Dino studio album: labryinthine guitar solos, vocals that alternate between whiny and gauzy (think Neil Young through a thick fog) and distortion.

But "Free So Free" also highlights the difference between Mascis and the grungers he inspired: Mascis doesn’t drone on. He writes finely barbed melodies that get under your skin and stay there, cut after cut.
