As many of us here are patiently (or not so patiently) awaiting the release of Free so Free .. 56 days away, according to my calculations .. I sent an e-mail to Ultamatum, asking where I could buy it.. They said any CIMS store should have it, and well as LINCS (an LA thing)

SO, a cool website for CIMS, is Coalition of Independent Music Stores.. For those who may not know where the nearest local independent record shop is..

If you will be travelling on Oct. 8, maybe buy Free so Free at a CIMS in your place of destination..

Please buy J’s record and all others from local record shops.. I know it is hard to find, especially in Southern California. (The plastic fantastic capital of the World!!!!!) 2 of my favorite record shops have closed down.. Damn if I going to let another fall to Tower, Wherehouse, et. al..

One more thing.. re: LINCS

Quoted from OC Weekely a while ago..

LINCS (Local Independent Network of CD Stores). "LINCS is a coalition of nine independent record stores in Southern California (Fingerprints in Long Beach; Aron’s in Los Angeles; Benway Music in Venice; Bionic Records in Cypress, Huntington Beach and Fullerton; Sounds Like in Riverside; Rhino Records in Claremont; and Salzer’s Music in Ventura). They’ve come together to have a better say and more buying power with record labels and various advertising avenues. It’s a bunch of backroom record-industry stuff, but basically LINCS allows these cool indie stores to grow and not be undercut or, worse yet, run out of business by lame and faceless record-store chains."

Amoeba technically is indie even though they have three stores now. The SF one is, in my opinion, one of the greatest places on earth. The Berkeley one isn’t as great, but of course beats the hell out of Tower, et al. I haven’t been to the LA one yet, but plan to make a trip up in the near future. I hear it’s even better than the SF one.

I didn’t know the one opened in L.A. already. I will expect a report, br.

The one here in SF is like a big treasure trove; my only complaint is that the employees (including Eric, haha) tend to suffer from ego gigantism and an overinflated sense of purpose. They act like frickin bouncers and roadies; pretending to know everything about every band, but actually all they do is twiddle the knobs. Or something.

It’s late, and I’m bitter. But I’d still go to Amoeba anytime to sift thru the goods. I first met J there *heavy teenybopper sigh* and of course have also scored some sweet treasures. I love the $2 used tapes.

And lots of hot guys shop there.

This is one of the coolest shops in Minneapolis…so pick it up here if you’re there… Let It Be

No attitude from the guys in the shop, great vinyl selection and the used stuff is incredible. Walked out of there with hundreds of dollars worth of stuff…hellacopters, thunders, mascis, and so on…

There is`nt much in indie record stores here, just the canadian biggies like HMV and Sam`s(who took a major blow last year due to money problems, there`s only one store left around here).I agree on record store employees,I think you have to have asshole written on your resume. There was this manager a few years back who did`nt like me,he used to stand up and block the cd`s so I could`nt look at them. There also was nice people though too, like this one guy in the jazz section who used to slash 5 bucks off for me,that was cool.

Salami hopefully more pleasing record shops come your way soon HMV sucks in such a huge way…prices are out of line for anything other than crap, less than knowledgeable clerks in my experience & they play the worst music imagineable. Usually end up leaving the store just to avoid the painful music

RBB hopefully someone points out some cool shops for you, congrats on the move Hopefully that doesn’t mean you’ll be a skins fan…

No way! Stillers, Superbowl. Maybe a Wiz fan though . Can’t wait for the football threads BTW, Allison.

Apparently the super bowl this year is going to be within walking distance of where I live. I’m thinking maybe I should rent my place out to some out-of- town suckers. Even with the the bowl so close, I sure as hell won’t be watching cause I hate football!!

Speaking of hockey,a local historian said recently that hockey was invented on a lake near where I live, while other places in Canada are claiming that they invented hockey.
Looking forward to the football threads too VF
