Hey,
We all know J has many cool and varied influences. My question is which one do you think influenced his sound the most…I probably missed some but hey what can you do [img]images/smiles/converted/dizzy.gif[/img]

Tough call,J mixed all those things in his playing;but I think the Detroit sound is the most visible,J likes those wild solos more than punk chording.
Punk is what immediately comes to mind, although I think now he favors the Detroit sound a bit more and uses elements of it more often.
Guess I don’t think of metal when I think J.
I voted for the Stones because that seems to be what J usually says. But he also says that Dinosaur was supposed to be really loud country which I have never understood. THe Stones have a definite country influence though. When I first heard Dinosaur I thought the idea was sort of slowed down Hard Core but that was just the attitude not really the sound.
Dinosaur in my opinion was a parody of 70s rock and roll. J sort of speeded it up a little some times and added a Guns and Roses influence and a Neil Young influence.
I don’t know what to say about The Fog. He seems to be using a kind of crunchy 70s pop to express religious ideas that I don’t really understand. By pop I mean all kinds of stuff from Carly Simon to KISS.
Uhh.. Maybe I should have just voted in the poll and kept my personal opinions to myself….
I voted for the Stones for lack of a better category. I truly hear TONS of classic rock in J.’s guitar sound…and I dont mean KZZZ’s seven billionth spinning of "Hold Me." It may be the fuzzy, warm, distortion or maybe its the "album" oriented music rather than "single" oriented crap. Whatever it is I hear just as much Hendrix as anything else……

All opinions welcome here definitely. I agree with you guys tons of varied sounds from Mascis. Punk…the Ramones/Wipers, Stones, Hendrix etc from the 60’s, Kiss definitely and the Detroit sounds well thats a given. Just wondered what you thought the primary influence was according to your ears.
For me its the Detroit sounds, Asheton guitar sound with Sonics influence thrown in….Heaven!!!
Metal well I included that cause J likes some metal bands….Black Sabbath, Motorhead etc so think he has been somewhat influenced by that.

ps I don’t remember putting option 5 as the stones…thought I put 60’s sounds….hmmmm
I always thought it was Bonham that got him into drumming…then he’s been influenced by different parties as the years have gone by…later stuff is obviously more influenced by The Zombies, Beach Boys and various folksters and the recordings have that BIG Phil Spector sound (especially the drums).
(I chose Hardcore by the way – that’s what captured Deep Wound’s imagination)

Country music is`nt for everyone I guess,I don`t think it`s as bad as people seem to think.
I don`t follow that achey brakey stuff either but I guess I wonder where the line gets drawn between mainstream and alternative country;I like the alt country stuff but not convinced on the new country stuff.
Johnny Cash does`nt remind me of new country,I find him pretty cool,very open minded in the last few years to cover songs by Glenn Danzig,Soundgarden,Nick Cave,etc.
most people his age would not be singing tunes by those guys!
