Hey,

I have picked up some pretty good tips on this board on different bands, always have been amazed by the variety and number of bands a lot of us listen to. So was wondering if anyone was interested in suggesting any other tips on movies, videos, books, mags with good articles….pretty much anything.

Recently saw the film Shadow of the Vampire starring some of my fav actors…Willem Dafoe, John Malkovich & Udo Kier (Andy Warhols Dracula). Hilarious & Creepy at the same time, no where near the original Nosferatu but pretty cool spin on the original concept. Soundtrack could have used more zip, Riptide Swim Sideways & Lets go to Church would have been perfect for this show…only my opinion thou.

Highly recommend the video The Search for One Eyed Jimmy, low budget but hilariously silly. Some very cool cameos by the Tutturo brothers, Samuel L Jackson, Ann Meara and Steve Buscemi to name a few. Definitely on the look out for the DVD of that one.

Recently finished a book by the neurologist Oliver Sacks called The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales. In it he reviews some pretty interesting examples of the neurological disorders/people he works with. The only problem I have with this book is a small one and probably related to the fact he is an old school neurologist….the terms he uses to describe some disorders/people are outdated. But hey an interesting read all the same. He has another similar book called An Anthropologist on Mars which is also very good.

Looking forward to any recommendations you guys can offer….keep it clean thou or I may call up the ghost of Bela Lugosi to haunt you.

well, my favourite book of 2000 was Dead Long Enough by James Hawes. It´s about those 4 guys who go to Dublin on a Birthday spree in order to prove to themselfes how young, whacky and fit they still are (all in their late thirties) and that´s where it all goes terribly wrong. The two other books from Hawes (A white Merc with fins and Rancid Aluminium) are great as well. My favourite book af all time is The male cross dresser support group by Tama Janowitz. I´ve urged everyone I know to read it and it went down a storm with most of them. It was very reassuring to find out that Pamela (the alter ego of Tama in this book) sees herself as a female member of society in exactly the same way as I see myself as a male. Love her for that. Sounds a bit enigmatic, almost sinister, but if you read it you will know what I mean.
I suppose you all read Filth by Irvin Welsh, but just in case you haven´t, it´s a must, almost as good as Maraboo Stork Nightmares. And if you liked The man who mistook….. you should read Great Apes by Will Self. You will find out why fairly early in the proceedings.
Favourite film of 2000 has to be Dancer in the Dark (Lars van Trier) and since I saw U-Turn by Oliver Stone I have a soft spot for Jenifer Lopez (sorry about that), but Christina Ricci is so much better and therefore Buffalo 66 wins hands down.
By the way, favourite five songs that deal with suicide
1) Violent Femmes – Country Death Song
2) Nomeansno – Dead Bob
3) Only Ones – Why don´t you kill yourself
4) Silverfish – A fucking strange way to get attention
5) Spacemen 3 – Suicide

That all for now folks

Hey,

Thanks for the suggestions, will definitely check some of them out. I knew there was a reason I never picked up U-Turn, thanks for the warning.

Don’t know 5 songs about suicide…oh well.

Thanks again,

I bought SugarTown @ blockbuster last week for $2 That is cheaper than renting. It has early versions of back before you go, leaving on a jet plane and a few small songs just for the movie (nerves theme and such).
Pretty cool. J is not in that one although he is in Grace Of My Heart if you have not seen that.

Movie: Crumb.
Rent Crumb. Watch Crumb. Watch it again.
Crumb.

Hey,

2 bucks you gotta love that, doubt I can match that deal but definitely will try. Have not seen Grace Of My Heart for awhile now….about time I think!!! The single Take a Run at the Sun is such a great disc, playing right now.

Crumb, Crumb, Crumb….should be cool.
I can hardly wait for the new Tim Burton Planet of the Apes…Paul Reubens has a large role…I miss Pee Wee Herman though.

Thanks,

Hey JCrumblecookies,

Wondering if the crumb you are suggesting is the documentary on Robert Crumb? I have seen that one, taped it actually when it was on awhile back…could be years. Quite the show, interesting family/situations to say the least. If thats not what you had in mind let me know if you get the chance.

I’m still waiting for THE SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE (I enjoy Williem Dafoe’s performances as well).

A mexican film called AMORES PERROS (Love is a bitch) was released the last year and is nominated for best foreign picture. I really liked it, but I must say that the director is notably influenced by Tarantino.

The best shortcut I’ve ever seen is also mexican and it’s called EL HÉROE (The Hero),it’s highly recommendable.

I can’t wait to see Peter Jackson’s new film: LORD OF THE RINGS, an adaptation from the novel by JRR Tolkien.

It will be a change for this director, totally moved away from the gore movies that he made in New Zeland. I miss them.

Hey Sickboy,

You will definitely love Shadow of the Vampire, Willem Dafoe nominated for academy award for that one. Still can’t believe he did a movie with madonna…god.
Recently saw a video called Animal Factory (or Animal Instinct can’t remember right now..not enuf sleep ahhhh), Dafoe plays a very cool tuff guy inmate, great parts by Mickey Rourke and various other great movie bad guys.

Read something about Tim Burton doing a remake of Willi Wonka with Marilyn Manson in the starring role…yikes.

Anyone influenced by Tarrantino is just fine by me, thanks for the info.

Hey Alison, yes indeedy, you’ve got the right Crumb family : R., Maxon, Charles. Filmed by R.’s friend Terry Zwigoff, the documentary is maybe #2 on my personal all-time fave-films list. (And for Dino fans,it’s not a stretch to say that there are many, many "Mascis moments" throughout.) As a psychological portrait of an artist, Crumb can’t be beat.
How about "Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf?" with Burton/Taylor as a nice film corollary to the Dino take on relationships? A little extreme, maybe, but not far off…

Hey JCrumblecookies,

That was an awesome documentary on the Crumb family…agree with the Mascis moments with the interviews etc….now just to find the tape you think I would learn to label things but no..god. Cool spin on the relationship issues presented by Mascis, love the taylor/burton mix…doesn’t get much better than that. Actually just saw that film on late nite tv a few weeks back never get tired of that one. Suddenly Last Summer was a pretty powerful film as well, Taylors screaming on the hill could break glass. Wicked film, check it out if you haven’t yet.

I just ordered a DVD copy of Tim Burtons Nightmare Before Christmas….so excited because it includes his short animated story called Vincent!!! Narrated by Vincent Price, early work by Tim Burton can’t get enough of that.

I just got back from the Berlin Film Festival. Saw 58 movies in 11 days and there is some stuff worth seeing. First the Film that got the golden Baer, Intimacy by Patrice Chereau. Not my personal favorite but definatly recommended. And Bates, you gonna like this, there are two Stooges songs on the soundtrack. I should warn you that this film has the most realistic sex scenes (not very erotic though) that I´ve ever seen on the screen. Julie Johnson with Lily Taylor and Courtney Love was good too, but basically because I just love Lily Taylor. She was there too, only 20 feet away. What a great moment of my life.
Actually I saw Crumb years ago on this very festival and thought it was a great documentary. Not so much about Crumb but about America.
This years best documentary was An American Nightmare. A film about the 60/70s horrorfilmmakers, Craven, Carpenter, Cronenberg and their peers. Not my genre, but a real nice documentary. Goddspeed you black Emperor did half of the soundtrack.
Also worth seeing: Werkmeisters Harmonies by Bela Tarr. Series Seven, Italian for Beginners (a Dogma film from Denmark, like a soap opera dogma style, but really funny and not as corny as you would think), Don´s Plum (the film that Leonardo Dicaprico doesn´t want us to see, I don´t know why really) and the Claim by Michael Winterbottom. This was a right tearjerker. Beautifully done.
More later
