I saw them doing two songs live on the BBC show ‘Later’ last week, and they didn’t sound exactly like the Carpenters
I am going to the Amsterdam gig as well. The Von Bondies and the 5,6,7,8’s (great name….) are supporting. Does anyone know these bands?

The 5 6 7 8’s are a japanese alternativerockpunk outfit. Those girls are sort of the grand old ladies of the japanese indie scene, they’ve been at it for 15 years or so. I saw them at the Devil Dolls festival in Oslo on saturday and they were…great!

Well, it was quite a night at the sold-out Melkweg this week!

5 6 7 8’s were three Japanes barbie-dolls playing surf-trash-punk-garage-rock-n-roll, and singing in a fantastic incomprehensible Engrish, den Buck and Hansione didn’t stop smiling the whole gig!
Vely Lock’n’Loll indeed!!!

Next up were the Von Bondies from Detroit (two boys/two girls), they sounded like a cross between the Pixies and Jon Spencer’s Blues Explosion in a garage…. Apart from one or two too long songs they were good (and the girl playing bass was ‘cool as Kim Deal’ )

Brother and sister White, aka the White Stripes introduced themselves as "hi, we are the New Carpenters" and played an excellent set, including a covers of ‘Jolene’ (Dolly Parton) and ‘Isis’ (Bob Dylan, thanks Hansione for that one….). Meg White plays the drums like Moe Tucker used to do in the Velvet Underground, just hitting the beat, and nothing else… Brother Jack plays guitar and sings, obvious influences: Jon Spencer (again), Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Stooges. The sound was excellent, and the crowd enjoyed it very much!

Well, Hansione and den Buck had a great night, and they finished it in style with another beer and a ‘patatje speciaal’ (Hansione) and a ‘patatje oorlog’ (den Buck)
