Inspired by Allison saying that Exene Cervenka`s voice drove her crazy after awhile I started thinking about singers that I like but can only stand so much of them.
My list:
Juliana Hatfield
Calvin Johnson(Beat Happening/Halo Benders)
Lou Barlow

Problably think up more another time.

What singers can you stand only so much of?

Bill Callahan (Smog)
Kurt Wagner (Lambchop)
Stuart Staples (Tindersticks)
Will Oldham
Jason Molina (Songs: Ohia)
Johnny Cash
Nick Cave

I like all of them, but in small doses, can’t imagine myself listening to a whole album of them without falling asleep, it’s probably my age…..

Hey Salamiguy,

Wow, you’re only the second person I’ve met who knows the Halo Benders.

As far as vocalists, even though I have pretty broad taste, my likes & dislikes are clear-cut. I either dig someone’s voice or I can’t stand it. A friend of mine once told me that, as a musician, "mediocre is the worst thing you can be".

take care

Hey,

Gotta add Niagara from Destroy All Monsters…scary at times but brilliant in very small doses

….and I might be the third…..

But seriously, I think that there are some people around here who like Built to Spill, and might have heard of the Halo Benders, as it is a side project of Calvin J. and Doug M. of BTS.

BTS play a version of ‘Virginia reel around the fountain’ on their excellent live album!

perhaps nico. i only have ‘chelsea girl’, and i like most the songs on that album. she definitely has a distinct voice, and i know some people who aren’t very musically inclined who just think she is a freak. well, maybe that’s justified. i like her singing on the VU songs too. i guess what i’m saying is that i don’t have a problem with her voice, but lots of people probably do.

i think if i like a band then i won’t get tired listening to one of their albums, no matter what their voice sounds like. if i don’t like someone’ s voice, i just won’t listen to that band. like deepsludge said about led zepplin…i hate led zepplin and can’t listen to that guy’s voice.

though now that i think about it, jeff mangum of neutral milk hotel has a voice that can kind of get to me sometimes. he can’t sing so he yells instead. oh, and maybe mudhoney.

Bill Callahan(Smog)-thanks den buck for reminding me about him,I could stand a few songs by Smog, that`s about it.
Stuart Staples(Tindersticks) sounds alot like Nick Cave,I like his voice alot, but after awhile it would be kind of tiresome.

Too much Shonen Knife would get to me after awhile.

Hey,

Couple more Halo Bender fans on this site that I know of, Robert recommended them to me about a year ago.

Sometimes its even the background vocals that can just kill a song. Mad For The Racket (Wayne Kramer, Brian James, Clem Burke etc) is one of them…Duff McCagen (?sp) ex of gnr just kills most of the songs for me…flat toneless singer

and Neil Young
oh wait, we have to like the singer,

I would like to shoot the self-important prick out of the Divine Comedy in the face. He would get it if he started singing any of his "National Express" songs near me.

And Anastacia. Come on, girl. No one sings like that.
