Could someone please tell me what exactly the term "indie rock" refers to? Is it applied to any and every artist who is not signed to a major label, or does it refer to a specific style of music?
Of course, all styles bleed into one another, but record stores have to divvy them up so they can appropriately direct their customers. The Grammys have to divvy them up so awards can be bestowed upon more people. Billboard has to divvy them up….wait, Billboard DOESN’T have to divvy them up. But they do anyway. I guess they have to have something to put in those pages.
I try to avoid the terminology, as it seems messy and neurotic and somehow irrelavent. But I’m interested nonetheless. I’m a language nerd, and a bit of a culture nerd as well. Could someone please tell me what "indie rock" is, cause I really don’t know.

Yeah,alt is a funny label now that it`s mainstream,people are still using the term though.

Rosa-as Matt said,short for independent though alot of bands are on major labels still get called indie.
As I said before,I think all the sub genres of rock and roll should just be called rock;not all these dumb terms like emo or twee or whatever.
My local record store used to have alternative,punk,and metal sections separate from pop rock;now the alt section,which includes indie stuff is thrown in with the pop rock section.Some indie stuff gets thrown in with the punk section.Why can`t they just have it all under rock?
Some people think indie means the same as alt,some think indie is the same as punk;it just gets confusing!
Modest Mouse are on a major label now but still get called indie;I guess it`s the style of the music rather then the label it`s on.The worst I’ve ever seen is a Camelot store (I had to lose a gift card) that had seperate sections for "rock/pop" and "alternative". Now I ask you, what is the real difference? And isn’t "alternative" a funny label now that its the mainstream?
And what the fuck is Twee???
You know I understand the need to label things as a way to help people understand what your talking about etc but YIKES!!! I just can’t imagine using the word twee in a conversation about music, I would probably break out laughing the moment I said it. But hey maybe my brain is frozen from the -30C weather out there <img> <img> <img>

I’m trying to stop using any labels in my conversation attall, I’d rather describe the band or even compare bands than just say, for example, "oh the Get Up Kids, they’re emo" because how can you use a single word to describe Mr Bungle or the White Stripes?
dammit, my response to this from yesterday did not work, but to hell with it. indie is a stupid term, as are most of its subcategories, although i like the term ‘sadcore’. makes it sound really pathetic. but yeah, you kind of need some way to categorize or describe music. i mean, there are genres in every medium, so this is no different. thats really all these styles are–genres. like taxes and death, they are an unavoidable part of life. theres really no point in fighting it because that would just be futile.
sort off topic, i hate when video stores or other people/things try and categorize ‘independent cinema’ as a genre. it really has nothing to do with genre at all, and completely with the means by which the movie was made. indie rock, on the other hand, refers to both the means by which it was made (ie, not by a major label) and its style, however ambiguous or hard to define that may be.
I think I will try and limit the use of subcategory labels like Malcom, find myself using the descriptive comparisons more anyways. I understand the need for labels, god you wouldn’t believe the labels on any little thing where I work…absolutely amazing, but sometimes it just adds to the confusion…err make that most of the time <img> <img> <img>
