Lately I find myself recommending new music to a wide range of friends, family and coworkers. OF COURSE I suggest Dinosaur Jr and J first. My question is when they come back and rave, what should I recommend next? Here are some of the more frequent ones:
1)Built to Spill–Keep it Like a Secret
2)Neil Young–Everybody Knows this is Nowhere
3)Husker Du–Zen Arcade
4)Karl Hendricks Trio–For Awhile it Was Funny
5)Modest Mouse–The Moon and Antartica
Any other suggestions/ideas/comments?June 17, 2002 at 4:00 pm #69915Quite cool list, RBB!
You can find quite a lot of cool suggestions in this topic!
June 17, 2002 at 4:45 pm #69916Another Neil Young one you should suggest is Rust Never Sleeps, you can`t go wrong with that one.
I would suggest the old standby`s like Sonic Youth,Pixies,Sugar,MBV,etc.June 17, 2002 at 8:51 pm #69917Hey RBB,

June 19, 2002 at 12:41 am #69919I wouldn’t recommend any swervedriver unless you’re trying to to kill them via boredom
Yeah, any Pixies and some Neil will do the job. Can’t think of anything that hasn’t already been mentioned.
Someone here turned me on to White Stripes and I’ve been hooked since. Of whoever your converting likes J’s more loud and aggressive stuff, intro them to the White Stripes June 19, 2002 at 2:01 am #69920Flaming Lips-Clouds Taste Metallic
Screaming Trees-Sweet Oblivion
Teenage Fanclub-Bandwagonesque
Catherine Wheel-Chrome or Ferment are both good albums.
Sloan-One Chord to Another
Meat Puppets, Pavement, Wipers, Red House Painters, and Afghan Whigs are also possibilities.
Good luck.
I always used to convert my friends by taking them to see Dinosaur Jr or J in concert. I’d buy the tickets, and I’d tell them that they only had to pay me back if they thought it was a great show. I’ve brought over 20 different people to the concerts, and everyone of them paid me back.June 19, 2002 at 11:06 am #69921Kurtz-if you`re basing your Swervedriver experience on 99th Dream no wonder you think it`s boring;Raise,Mezcal Head, and Ejector Seat Reservation are definitely not boring,I think VF will agree with me on that.

June 19, 2002 at 11:31 am #69923Hey Colonel,
Don’t make me come over there
99th Dream sucked by Swervedrive, way to quiet for my taste, couple good songs but not any I would take the time to play very often. Really didn’t like Toshack Highway by Adam the singer either… Like SG said they have some wicked discs though, they were originally called Shake Appeal…after the Iggy song and said Dino Jr was a huge influence on them so take it from there. Fingers crossed they return to their sonic roots, saw them live a couple years ago…hypNOtizing, sonic and wickedly cool

June 19, 2002 at 12:12 pm #69924Thanks for all the suggestions! Actually borrowed a couple of Buffalo Tom discs today. Stripes would have been on the list a couple months back. Now everyone seems to know who they are.
June 20, 2002 at 12:22 am #69925Rust Belt Blues, If I interpreted you wrong, I apologize in advance. PLease don’t be offended, but I think you might want to have your friends check out the White Stripes, because they are a good band. Who cares if people know about them. A groups popularity shouldn’t matter. If a group makes good music, then it’s worth a listen. Radiohead, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppilin, The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix are extremely popular, but they are still worth listening to.
So many indie music fans (I’m not lumping you in this group Rust Belt, just venting) turn thier back on a group as soon as they sign to a major, or get a sniff of mainstream acceptance. Personally, I think this is a battle J has had to fight since Green Mind. Dinosaurs first 3 albums were embraced by indie kids everywhere. J signs to a major, and releases Green Mind to mixed reviews. It bothers me that some people won’t even give More Light a listen because J has supposedly lost his indie cred.
I could go on and on, but I think I already got off of the original topic long ago. If music is good, listen to it.June 20, 2002 at 11:52 am #69926Not my meaning at all. Just meant that I’ve already turned almost everyone I know onto them. I talked about nothing else for like 3 months straight, actually. Whole bunch of us went to see them live a couple of months back. Although I respect the DIY mentality, I’m not stuck on it. Saw Weezer twice in 2 months, for Christ’s sake, and I’m stoked to see them with the Strokes! If that doesn’t kill my indie cred, I don’t know what could. In conclusion, White Stripes rule, Meg should be my wife.
June 20, 2002 at 12:02 pm #69927All the Nations Airports – Archers of Loaf
Slanted and Enchanted – Pavement
Malkmus – Malkmus
Debut – Sammy
Spasm Smash XXX OX Ox Ox and Ass – Trumans Water.June 21, 2002 at 1:56 am #69928Rust Belt,
I’m glad you weren’t offended by my comments. Sorry I misinterpreted your post.
It just seems to me like a lotta indie fans where I live abandon a group any time they gain popularity. The whole idea of not liking something because others know about them always bothered me. So I guess I’ve always been sensitive to the issue. Hell, It seems to me like I’ve spent a good portion of the last 10 years trying to convince various record store workers that J is still relevant!
p.s. I’ll stay away from Meg if you leave Nina from The Cardigans for me! -
