The best gig I’ve been to this year (even J’s solo acoustic show). I’m still reeling.

      Did anyone make a recording?

one of the guys in the queue in front of me said he had recorded primal scream and a,a,m + w the night before and he was also going to record the mean fiddler show … i guess i should have made friends w/him … but he seemed v.professional about it … his friend was too … so they didn’t seem v.friendly or approachable (just my 1st impression …. but …. if they’re reading this … maybe they’d consider sharing w/all of us ??) :D

Sorry Flying Cloud, I’ve been neglectful of my duties:

After a so so set from heavily AC/DC influenced support band "the beatings" punctuated by a good rendition of "the Money will Roll Right In" (by the Angry Samoans I think) Asheton Asheton Mascis & Watt took the stage. Ron & Scott’s arrival was met with rapturous applause and much cheering before the band launched into "Funhouse". Standing at the back the bass was shaking my chest and through the wall of solid guitar noise we get the raw energy of the song with Mike Watt’s very passable Iggy Pop vocals. Crowd inevitably goes wild.

The set continues with more blistering solos from J who appears to be enjoying the show more than I’ve seen him before freed from singing duties and applying himself solely to torturing his trademark guitar noise from his Sunburst Fender Jaguar (I think, I was near the back).

The tunes are exclusively from the first two Stooges albums the real highlight tracks being Loose, TV Eye and Real Cool time where the crowd became even more excited.

Mike then calls for someone from the audience to sing Little Doll (I’m not 100% sure what song but this is my educated guess) a la Iggy and the guy from the audience does a good line in screaming vocals, crowd loves it, at the end he takes off his shirt (an homage to the Ig), I think he wanted to do more because he hung around for a while but Mike Watt takes back the reins and sings through the rest of the set.

The crowd is now begging for more as the Asheton Brothers (both looking pretty good when you consider they must be at least 50), Mike & J leave the stage. Inevitable the crowd are baying for more of this exquisite wall of sound and not much more than 2 minutes later the quartet return to the stage plus one vocalist and launch into the classic " I wanna be your dog", crowd explodes again into an orgy of activity and some people call for Raw Power (3rd Album so probably a no-no) as Mike Watt thanks everyone for being kind enough to show up and says something about T-Shirts. He then thanks the band one last time and they leave the stage for the last time. The disappointment afterwards surges through the room as the PA pumps out classic punk records and everyone acknowledges that its the end for tonight after a set probably not much longer than 80 minutes.

Time for my tacky ending (to go with my tacky review) I don’t know about anyone else, but I had a "real cool time".

Holy Shit – just heard the guest singer for the show (I guess who was pulled in from the crowd) was none other than Lou Barlow!!!

Here is what I got from Eric (the tour manager)

                  Quote:
                  hey jeremiah,

just thought you might want to know that Lou Barlow was a guest singer at both the Brixton Academy show on the Dec 8th and the Mean Fiddler show on Dec 9th. As close to a dinosaur Jr. reunion as we will probably ever see! We were trying to get Nick Cave to come down to do a couple but he had a last minute trip to Iceland. Bobby Gillespie did "No Fun" at the Brixton show and noone was injured!

                  Eric

As you can guess I am now on a mad hunt for Recordings of the show!!!!

                  wow wow wow[/quote]

Lous must have come on for the encore – I wanna be your dog, right at the end, because the guy from the audience definitely wasn’t Lou. I just wish I’d known at the time… Cos Lou rocks

yep … the 1st guy was just a random guy from the crowd (he did "no fun"), but the 2nd guy (who was never introduced — he just came out from the backstage area) was definitely lou  … he really threw himself into it + he did a great job :D :)

This is what Mike Watt has to say about it (not that much actually… ;)):

the first one was just some cat from out in the audience (for "no fun") and lou barlow was second (for "I wanna be your dog").

                              on bass, watt
