J Mascis
Laut war’s und saucool, soviel steht fest. Aber war es deshalb auch gut oder schön? Eine schwierige Frage. Wenn mich nicht alles täuscht, ist es sechseinhalb Jahre her, dass J Mascis zum letzten Mal als Headliner auf einer Kölner Bühne stand. 1994 spielten Dinosaur Jr im proppevollen E-Werk, dieses Mal reichte es gerade einmal für den wesentlich kleineren Prime Club. Und dort zeigte sich einmal mehr, dass sensationelle Platten nicht immer ebenso gottgleiche Konzerte nach sich ziehen.
Denn auch, wenn J im Umgang mit Fans und Medien in den letzten Jahren eine Menge dazugelernt hat und wesentlich lockerer geworden ist, wirklich wohl zu fühlen scheint er sich auf der Bühne immer noch nicht. Klar, er wird sich zu Recht gedacht haben, dass sein ausgezeichnetes Solodebut "More Light" eine möglichst breite Anerkennung verdient und angesichts seiner berühmt-berüchtigten Wortkargkeit bei Interviews sind Konzerte wohl die einzige Alternative. Wenn dabei aber Konzerte wie das in Köln herauskommen, muss man sich dennoch fragen, ob sich J damit wirklich einen Gefallen tut. Denn wenn man bei den meisten Songs das Schlagzeug nicht hören konnte, weil Bass und die einzige (!) Gitarre viel lauter sind, dann läuft irgendetwas schief. Natürlich war Drummer George Berz gewissermaßen das schwächste Glied in der Kette, der neben Saitengott Mascis auch noch Bass-Legende Mike Watt angehörte, aber trotzdem gibt es bei Konzerten bestimmte Regeln, die jeder Musiker beachten sollte. Dem Publikum gleich mit den ersten beiden Nummern das Trommelfell zu zerschießen gehört einwandfrei nicht dazu. Apropos Publikum: Erschreckend hoch lag das Durchschnittsalter der Besucher, und soviel Mühe sich J. mit den neuen Songs à la "Where’d You Go?", "Same Day", "Waistin" oder "More Light" auch gab, mehr als artigen Applaus spendeten die versammelten 30-Somethings nicht. Nur als "Little Fury Things" und "The Lung" vom 1987er Meisterwerk "You’re Living All Over Me" auf der Setlist standen, kam ein bisschen Stimmung auf. Das eigentliche Highlight im Mainset war deshalb eigentlich die einzige wirkliche Ãœberraschung: Die beinharte, von Mike Watt gesungene Stooges-Coverversion "Not Right". Auch wenn Mascis bei den Zugaben dann noch einmal alles weggerockte, was im Prime Club nicht fest im Boden verankert war, cool ist eben doch nicht gleichzusetzen mit gut.

J MascisIt was loud as hell and it was dead cool – so much for sure. But was it also good, or beautiful? A difficult question. If I get it right, it was six and a half years ago, when J Mascis stood the last time as the headliner on a stage in Cologne. In 1994, Dinosaur Jr played in in the tightly packed venue ‘E-werk’, this time it’s just the much smaller Prime Club. And there was shown once more, that sensational records don’t always lead into divine live shows. Although J has learned a lot about the handling of fans and media in the last years and became substantially more relaxed, he still doesn’t really feel well on stage. Clearly, he will have imagined that his excellent debut solo album "More Light" deserves as much of a broad acknowledgment as possible and because of his notorious silence in interviews, live shows remain probably the only alternative.
However, if the result are shows like the one in Cologne, one must ask oneself nevertheless whether J thereby really does himself a favour. Because if one could scarcely hear the drums in most of the songs, while the bass and the only (!) guitar are much louder, then there is something wrong. Of course drummer George Berz is to a certain extent the weakest member in the chain, next to string god Mascis and bass legend Mike Watt, but nevertheless there are certain rules for live shows, which each musician should consider. To tear the ear drums of the audience already with the first two songs doesn’t show that these rules are kept. Apropos audience: The average age of the visitors has been frightening high, and as much effort J. made with the new songs à la "Where’d You Go", "Same Day", "Waistin" or "More Light", there wasn’t much more reaction of the 30-Somethings than some well-behaved applause. Only when "Little Fury Things" and "The Lung" of the 1987er masterpiece "You’re Living all Over Me" came on the set list, the climate improved. The actual highlight of the set was therefore actually the only real surprise: The Stooges cover version "Not right", sung by Mike Watt. Even though Mascis rocked during the encores everything away that wasn’t fixed on Prime Club floor, cool is still not exactly the same as good.
