ok, I ordered these CD’s from SecretlyCanadian (the new Songs:Ohia record and some Nikki Sudden CD’s). I payed them with paypal, they sent an email to confirm the order and everything looked fine.
Well, the CD’s didn’t show up for over two weeks.
Yesterday, I got a note of the customs office, that they had an undeclared shipment of goods, enclosed with some instructions how to make a customs declaration

Besides other thrills I have to show up in their office within 7 days and bring 2 copies of the invoice with me – German copies, please!

All I can bring is the email of SecretlyCanadian. We’ll see if I can convince the customs officers to hand me these CD’s, and what it will cost.
What I really like to know is why there is that customs trouble. I’ve made several other orders abroad, without any messing with customs

ok, sorry for the rant, I don’t hate buying CD’s in general …I’m just slightly frustrated
March 1, 2003 at 5:28 pm #91782Hey there!
I feel kinda stupid doing this in English, since we’re both german and all that jazz, but I don’t want to exclude anybody, so…
The German customs are a royal pain in the ass, I remember ordering some records from Kill Rock Stars or K Records and not only had they (the custom dudes) damaged a record cover while cutting open the package, but also they were apparently very keen on giving me a hard time, making me pay extra "Einfuhrsteuer".
So I can totally understand your anger.
Sometimes when yer lucky and the people sending you the records/cds put a lower price than the actual one on the green sticker you may get away with it. Somebody once told me that the limit is about $/€ 50, so maybe you’re aus dem Schneider anyway?
As for the Secretly Canadian stuff: I think you should be able to get the CDs/LPs from Cargo Records, which is their German distributor, which would be less problematic and probably even less expensive, although I can definitely understand the "thrills" of ordering directly from a small label. The new Songs: Ohia album, by the way, is a little weird…
Now I’ve gone into a rant myself…so I should probably stop here with wishing you the best of luck…beat the bastards
& good night Mrs. Ochmonek, wherever you may be…March 1, 2003 at 7:53 pm #91783Hey FC, I buy quite a lot of cd’s through the net myself, had trouble with Dutch customs twice, both times the company sending the stuff had put an amount of over $30 on that green sticker, so that seems to be the ‘trigger value’ for our customs office to get into action, and add ‘a little tax’ to the package, basically spoiling the fun for you, the customer. So, every time I order something in the US or Canada, I ask if they want to declare the stuff as a gift/trial copy, and that has always worked fine!

By the way, I ordered the new Songs:Ohia record through Germany’s excellent Glitterhouse mail-order (no problems with customs, and very decent prices):

She ordered this Songs Ohia Cd for me (I hope
)If u ordered it by Secretly Canadian u get a double cd with some cool demos & the new Cd
Like the new album very much, only the guest vocals are a bit out of way
But back to topic: yeah this sucks :slap:
March 2, 2003 at 3:06 am #91785Last week I did my first attempt to order by mail. The new cd of the Folk implosion for only 11 $. When I pressed the submit button I saw that the costs of delivery added another 10$ to the price. So 21$ is the same as I pay in the store :slap:
Ofcourse I will go the the shop…nice people there
Freaksceners in Europe….What sites do you use to order cd’s.
March 2, 2003 at 10:24 am #91786Where have I been? I completely forgot that this was coming out!!!

In case none of you have heard it yet, you can download the first track from the new album on the Secretly Canadian front page, at the bottom.
All I have to say is: WOW!!!! Must…. have… CD….
March 2, 2003 at 11:56 am #91787hey folks, thanks a lot for clearing up this customs mess a bit!

I see, it’s the amount, which seems to make the difference! Will have an eye on that in the future
… and it’s not even something particularly German
Hansione: generally, amazon works fine for me. And $10 for shipment
what a special bargain!
yeah, I ordered that CD because of the special edition you can get directly from Secretly Canadian. I’ll check it out, before forwarding it to Spaceboy (…if I ever get it)
March 2, 2003 at 7:24 pm #91788Some of the sites/companies i order from:
Miles of Music, American (roots) music, decent prices & shipping rates, excellent service! (and they have a fine on-line music magazine: the MoMzine
Glitterhouse from Germany, you can order nearly everything from them, as long as it isn’t Britney Spears… They also run their own label with bands like 16 Horsepower, Hazeldine, Willard Grant Conspiracy, the White Birch, Walkabouts etc. etc.
CDbaby, one of the most amusing cd-stores on the web, if anyone wants to sell their cd’s through the web, this seems to be the place to do it. You can spend hours on their site listening to a lot of stuff, just check it out (I bought stuff like Longwave and the Transmissionary 6 through CDbaby)
March 6, 2003 at 4:26 pm #91789… finally got these records yesterday.
It was just 13,29 extra tax

found out that the limit in Germany is 22 Euros, any higher amount for imported goods will be punished by extra taxes
no problem, though – doesn’t hurt me, funny experience, all in all
just listening to the Songs:Ohia record

the bonus CD is very very quiet, and sorta weird. All the songs seem to sound the same..
But the ‘normal’ CD is fine, I like it very much – even the guest singer. So: many thanks to Spaceboy for the hint
… and thanks again for yer helpful comments, guys
March 6, 2003 at 4:35 pm #91790Mine’s on the way… I’m getting kinda twitchy though, it better get here soon.

Hope I was one of the lucky first 1000 to get the bonus disk too…
