Hmm. . . yeah. With my Livejournal up in wraps right now, ’tis nice to know I can rely on my old buddies hangin’ in the FreakScene.
I went out CD shopping a coupla days ago at Vintage Vinyl. Vintage Vinyl is what I think of as a "real" music shop, one with chipped and peeling racks with stickers randomly applied, curling posters on the wall, and true geeks working behind the counter. The Geeks are the critical part of any CD store. If I want opinions on the Replacements or the Feelies or whatever, I want my Damned opionions, not some shrug from a loser who thinks REM is "underground."
Anyway, maybe I’ve watched "High Fidelity" to many times, but I’ve always loved browsing through the racks at Vintage Vinyl, makes me feel cooooolll. And as I walk in the other day, the guy working the counter says, "you work at the library in Dogwater don’t you?"
"why yes I do"
"and you were at the Grand Ulena show weren’t you"
"I was"
"yeah, I knew who you were, my names Darrin Grey, you are. . ."
"I’m Malcom"
* * *
I’ll take this moment to give you my 6 degrees of seperation from Sonic Youth.
1)I know a couple of guys (both named Matt) who are friends with Darrin Grey
2)Darrin Grey has played bass on records by Jim O’Rourke
3)Jim O’rourke is now a member of Sonic YouthSo were like practically family

So we talk for a minute, and it turns out the guy’s been working there for, like eleven years. He knew me from the shop, he knew me from work, but he never really put it all together. crazy man. I had the same shit going on. Even odder, I only live a few blocks away from where he and his family (girlfriend and kid). AND his girlfriend works at the Library system and understudied at my work. It’s kinda weird how two guys’ lives can cross over each other without really connecting. What struck me as odd was that I’d figured that his playing with Jim O’Rourke (i’ll have to confirm this) would have him out of the disc dealing industry. BIt of a reality cheque there.In other news, I’ll be leaving town Friday for Lansing, Mi and the big Abe Froman graduation party. The Drummer for the band Abe Froman has graduated from school and is throwing a big concert to celebrate. What this means for me is (A) I’ll be seeing the Devil is Electric and the Carrie Nations along with other obscuris LIVE and (better yet)(B) I’ll be spending a few days out of town with a pink haired cutie named sara(withoutanh). fab
And for the record, I bought a book called "the Hipster Handbook" the other day, you guys should read this, it’s pretty damned funny.
