word freaks!
I’m running windows XP and during a periodic update windows messenger was kind enough to update itself and install a nice little icon on my lower right taskbar.
I have no intention of ever using this program, have never even seen it on my computer before, and would really like to get rid of it. Everytime I try to close it out it gives me a list of programs that "might" need messenger to run, and therefore I can’t shut it down without first going through all these other programs and closing them as well.
When I go to the program install/uninstall option under Desktop, this program is not available in the "list" of programs I am "allowed" to delete.
So, how can I uninstall Windows Messenger rather than simply delete it from my hard drive?
God damn I hate XP! :slap:
Thank ya!
the ineffable me

have you tried control panel/add or remove programs? is that same as the desktop thingy you’ve tried? that will create a list for you of programs you can remove, messenger should show up on that list. at least it does for me. then "simply" press remove, and you should be rid of the nasty little bugger.also, you should make windows update ask you for permission to download and install updates. there’s a lot of things it wants to install on your puter you might not need or want there. remember, never trust the big ones. yeah, fight the power Chuckie D!

Download it & then run the program, easy as 1 2 3
November 12, 2003 at 10:52 am #97174add remove programs then add/remove windows components.
November 12, 2003 at 1:35 pm #97175Open Messenger, go into options and look for something like "run messenger on startup" and uncheck it. I’d be more specific, but I’m pulling this from my memory.

Space coyote-once I DL and install from your link, will I be able to get rid of the new program that uninstalled MESSENGER?
Mighty Matt- would rather completely uninstall than just shut MESSENGER down
Seems to me on Windows2000 when you wanted to add/remove a program, all you had to do was click on that icon. Then a widow would open up and you could NAVIGATE all around your computer until you found what you wanted to uninstall.
Am I right, wren’t you able to then access any part of your computer from the add/remove window? On XP, when I click on add/remove program, I only get a certain list of programs that I am "allowed" to delete. I can’t even navigate around my computer to find stuff to delete even if I wanted to!!! WTF?!
ex) I have ADOBE ACROBAT installed and even if I wanted to remove it, I couldn’t, because it doesn’t show up in the list of uninstallabel programs!!!I really really really dislike Windows XP. Whatever happened to KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!! :slap:

Thanx for the help all!

November 13, 2003 at 8:40 pm #97178do what mattman said and you’re fine.
in xp, messenger can tie with outlook, and i think outlook express.
are you running microsoft office?
I have noticed on every outlook launch, from windows xp/office 2k a presence of the msn messenger icon in the system tray (not signed in though) and i was never able to kill it while outlook was opened, receiving that error K7 said.
but if you really wanted to get rid of it, i would windows update that bad boy to the latest version everything, and you’ll be able to uninstall it. -
