What does J mean by ‘the wagon’? he mentions it in ‘Quick Sand’ and ‘The Wagon’ Judging by the lyrics in Quick Sand it’s something he once had, maybe a girlfriend? or maybe just an old tour bus!? i have no idea, discuss J’s wagon. And give your own interpretations on the song(s) :D

      Lyrics:

      The Wagon

      There’s a way I feel right now
Wish you’d help me, don’t know how
We’re all nuts, so who helps who
Some help when no one’s got a clue

      Baby, why don’t we
      Baby, why don’t we

      There’s a place I’d like to go
When you get there then I’ll know
      There’s a place I know you’ve been
Here’s a wagon, get on it

      Baby, why don’t we
      Baby, why don’t we
      Baby, why don’t we
      Baby, why don’t we
      Why don’t we

      You won’t see me
      You won’t see me
There you are and here I stand
Tryin’ to make you feel my hand
      You won’t see me
      You won’t see me
I ring the doorbell in your mind
But it’s locked from the outside
      You won’t see me
      You won’t see me
      You don’t live there anyway
But I knock on it all day
      You won’t see me
      You won’t see me

      There’s a place I go
      But you’re not there
      And I’m supposed to know
      How to get to where
      You’re gonna be
      But you don’t even know

      So I’m flakin’
      While you’re shakin’ it
      With every stone you fly
Without a mind, without a spine
What is it that you wanna find

      [Solo]

      There’s a place I go
      But you’re not there
      And I’m supposed to know
      How to get to where
      You’re gonna be
      But you don’t even know

      So I’m flalin’
      While you’re sailin’ off
      Without a course in mind
Without a mind, without a dock
What is it that you wanna find

      There’s a place I’d like to go
When you get there then I’ll know
      There’s a place I know you’ve been
Here’s a wagon, get on it

      Baby, why don’t we
      Baby, why don’t we
      Why don’t we

      You won’t see me
      You won’t see me
There you are and here I stand
Tryin’ to make you feel my hand
      You won’t see me
      You won’t see me
I ring the doorbell in your mind
But it’s locked from the outside
      You won’t see me
      You won’t see me
      You don’t live there anyway
But I knock on it all day
      You won’t see me
      You won’t see me

      Quick Sand

I’m closer to the golden dawn
      I can’t believe the wagon’s gone
      It’s history
I’m living in a callous realm
Where others seem to dig it
      Just too much reality
I’m frightened by the total goal
I’m drawing to the ragged hole
And I ain’t got the wagon anymore
No, I ain’t got the wagon anymore

I’m the twisted name on Uma’s eyes
I’m living proof of Cindy’s lies
      Of destiny
I’m drawing between the light and dark
      Where others see their targets
      I can’t see anything

Should I leave the engine on
To listen to that mountain song
Sinking in the quicksand of my thoughts
And I ain’t got the wagon anymore

      Don’t believe in yourself
      Don’t deceive with belief
The knowledge comes with death’s release
      Oh, oh, oh, oh…

      Not too stable
      Hanging by a string
      Can’t face the thoughts
      No wheels will bring
      I gotta go
It’s bad enough being at home
Without a way to leave the damage
      Is gonna show

If I don’t explain what you oughta know
You can tell me all about it
      At the next ball show
I’m sinking in the quicksand of my thoughts
And I ain’t got the power anymore

      Don’t believe in yourself
      Don’t deceive with belief
The knowledge comes with death’s release
      Oh, oh, oh, oh…

      Don’t believe in yourself
      Don’t deceive with belief
The knowledge comes with death’s release
      Oh, oh, oh, oh…

      Don’t believe in yourself
      Don’t deceive with belief
The knowledge comes with death’s release
      Oh, oh, oh, oh

I’ve heard something about a crashed car J had. And that he crashed while listened to an old demo with the Bowie tune Quicksand. But I don’t know.

On top of what mind glow just said, I always assumed the car that J crashed (his parents I believe) was possibly a station wagon or a wagoneer or something like that.

Yeah, it’s the same penis tree as at the other place.

Ummm, I think J. totally ripped off teh Beatles with all those "You won’t see me"’s.

I read an interview in a magazine in the ’90s (which has the authenticity of pronouncements like "My sister’s boyfriend’s uncle’s nephew’s teacher’s goddaughter told me.") that J rolled his (parents?) station wagon on the way to a gig, and wrote The Wagon about the crash. Hence lines in the song "without a course in mind" and "without a mind" – references to dumb metal? And "So I’m flalin" and "While you’re sailin’ off" painting a image of a rather out of control situation.

It never said whether he mad the gig.

It’s not "baby you can drive my car".

                      You really should know that.

I don’t know you or what it means. I do have an opinion about the song though. It’s maybe about a pilgrimage, or is it pin the tail on the donkey? I think it’s about him wanting to meet the idiot he’s been writing songs at, because you really should know the person if you’re gonna use em, or have their ssn and chirps memorized. There might be some lonely person he wrote that at that died, ya know, like an expendable con subject of government waste. What a bunch of bullshit. No one is expendable, and…I wonder who writes some of these songs I’ve been hearing. It’s just the way I see it. J’s no psychiatrist, he’s a singer..Does J ever writing songs about herding animals? :P Who was that, Teddy Roosevelt? He was cool too.

:) That’s just my opinion…I’ve heard the song enough never to want to hear it again. 8)

well, it could be that the vocal repeats a text line, without having that textline to be the name of the song. or is that impossible ? if you were to guess the name of dinosaur jr’s songs without heard or seen them before, I guess you could understand why I asked.

I know beatles’ songs are more standard built with verse , chorus that repeats itself over and over again.

But It’s just that I haven’t heard that beatles song before. so why not ask. or is that blasphemy in this beatles house.

I can’t even start to explain how f*ing disappointed I am if this proves to be right(that the song is about a car crash,) I’ve allways regarded it as a great song about relationship difficulties. -Trying to do your best, but you still get no response, or the wrong response from the person you’re with/wanting to date/are in love with etc.
God damn you J, here I was admiring you for your skill to pin out how difficult love can be sometimes(plus having a brilliant solo -all in 4.54min.), and all the time the song was about you being afraid to tell your father that you wrecked his car?!? :D

yeah well, after reading "Please Kill Me," I started thinking that every great rock song was about heroin.
