We have cascading taxes on fuel, pay 7% gst on the excise fuel tax

While we Europeans, needless to say, feel for those of you there on the other side of the Atlantic, it’s perhaps worth noting that the Dutch currently pay almost 1.30 euro’s for a litre of gas. That’s about $6 a gallon.
You have a long way to come yet, USA. We have seen the future — and it’s expensive.

close to $2 a gallon here in the lonesome crowded east. costs $18 to fill up my ESCORT. i read that too, allison, and basically no one pays attention to their mileage until now. they estimate it takes 7 years to make the money back

Well, american cars drink a lot of gas. Too much compared to what the rest of the world does. (remember the kiyoto deal, who did not accept it…?)
I hate to bring reality into the gasout equation, but well, this explains it better than I can
what I’ve read lately is that the European gasoline spot markets are buyed empty by US traders these days, as they expect the gas consume to be rising in spring, and there is not enough refinery capacities in the US. So they can’t buy the oil & refine it, but buy the gas here directly. this is why the gas price rose faster than the oil price the last weeks.
they decided, not to invest in new refineries, but to just buy all gasoline they can get, accepting that the price rises for everyone
the chain mail is also circulating heavily over here, translated in German, pretending to be from a friend’s friend…

I’m spoiled by the car, even with the expense I couldn’t do without it! I think I’d freeze to death in the winter here riding a bike, the frost bite from -40c might interfere with that healthy thing

bike/train: 45 minutes, in which dB reads the newspaper, drinks a cup of coffee (or a beer on the way back home….

Obviously people are just going to buy gas on Tues. or Thurs. instead. What I think is cool is that we’re drawing attention to the matter and in reality, if we come together and unite behind a singular issue, we can make change. What it would really take is changing our perceptions and attitudes towards driving. If we collectively started driving less, drove only when necessary (stopping by the store on our way home for work rather than making 10 trips a day to purchase goods), car pooling, using more conservative means (bicycle), etc., we could make a lot of change. That’s what I was really trying to get at here…us getting together…
I wish we had a better infrastructure/public transportation system, but in many places here it’s just not a reality. We have to drive…We’re working on it though :aliensmile:

Also, U.S. standards on emissions are the strictest around, which could mean we also use gas the most efficiently. That is, efficiency is acheived through better combustion (this is way more complex than this, but it’s the general idea), so we are actually getting "more bang for our buck". So I don’t even want to hear "American cars drink a lot of gas"
Bottles of beer at the TRENDY bars around here are going for $5 for a twelve ounce. And I’m not talking danky stuff either…
Corona, 5 bucks, budweiser, 5 bucks, miller light, 5 bucks, Guinness, 5 bucks, Bass, 5 bucks…you get the idea(there’s one bar though where it’s $5, but it’s a 20 ounce pint, so ounce for ounce, that is pretty comparable to REGULAR prices and is the usual watering spot
