…..an old one that is. i played a new japanese reissue today at the shop and it just didn’t play like i wanted it to. i really like the way fender fretboards age, and this one just didn’t feel like that at all. does anyone know a good place to find a cheap one? or is the phrase "cheap vintage jazzmaster" an oxymoron now?
I see the old ones on ebay sometimes, and a local vintage guitar shop has a couple, but cheap is definitely not a word that I would use…
I think the cheapest I ever saw one go for in recent years was around $1500, but you can usually count on $2000 – $2500 from what I’ve seen.
I also tried a Japanese reissue, but it doesn’t feel right…….the worst is that it’s the only Jazzmaster I’ve ever seen in aguitar shop in my hoemtown
I have one of the USA ’62 reissues. Got it used for $800. It’s pretty acurate to the old ones (much better tuners though, but they still look like the vintage ones), even using the same cellulose finish and pickgaurd that they made the originals with. I’m very impressed with it!
Thinking about swapping out the bridge though…

yeah, those things arnt cheap. there are a couple in a local music store for about 3500 each… i cant tell what year they are because they only let "serious investors" go into the room where they are, but i know that one of them is sunburst and the other is a really worn down surf-green kind of color. they look pretty nice, so maybe that is a reasonable price, but then again im a bass player so i don’t know that much about vintage guitars..
woah you live in danville. i live in roanoke. kinda close i guess. yea, i’m thinking about just forgetting about all the vintageness concerning effects and guitars and just buying new stuff because it”s a whole lot cheaper and easier to find. once i have some money i’ll blow plenty of it on nice vintage stuff.
The big difference in sound between the Japan Jazzmasters and the USA ones (both old and reissue) is that the USA pickups are wound shallow, but wide, which produces the Jazzmaster’s trademark sound, while the japan ones are wound narrow, but deep, which is more like a strat… However, Seymour Duncan makes a jazzmaster pickup that’s supposedly made to the spacs of the old USA ones. I haven’t tried them myself though…
Seriously though, the USA reissues are REALLY REALLY good! Try on out if you get the chance. They don’t have the old, broken-in neck feel of and old guitar, but still think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. :aliensmile:

thanks for the info mattman. i’m going to college next year (about 6 weeks actually), and i would like to get a guitar to just junk around with if i don’t think it will get stolen. the jazzmaster’s definitely my first pick.
