J. Mascis, mastermind of the influential underground rock band Dinosaur Jr. and founder of J. Mascis and the Fog, is known as an independent rock icon who helped define slacker and grunge rock worldwide.
He’s a musician who has found excellence in remaining spontaneous.
"I always just kinda do what I feel like doing," he said in an interview Wednesday from outside Boston. "I have no plan." (:aliensmile:)
And he never followed in the cover song footsteps of anyone.
"I didn’t know any covers. I just started doing my own songs," said Mascis, who performs a solo show Monday at Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium.
"I’ll play songs from all different eras," he said. "I usually just cover all the stuff."
He’s back from a tour of Australia with Sonic Youth.
On Wednesday he was selling flowers as part of his work for Mata Amritanandamayi, also known as Ammachi, the world-renowned "hugging" saint and philanthropist from India.
"Sometimes she hugs 500 people a day," he said. "She is this Mother Teresa kind of person. In India, she has free hospitals for the poor and free houses. I’m working for her while she’s in America. I play music while she’s hugging people, and do different things. Right now I’m selling flowers. I remember I got a hug from her 10 years ago and I wanted to get more into it. She’s helped me, and it feels good to help her because she’s helping so many people."
J. Mascis made his way onto the music scene 20 years ago with the release of Dinosaur Jr.’s first album "Dinosaur" in 1985.
He was in the throes of masterminding Dinosaur Jr. when Cobain asked him to be Nirvana’s drummer.
Dinosaur Jr. reached legend status in many circles after releasing the records "You’re Living All Over Me (1987)" and "Bug (1988)" and seeing a lot of MTV limelight.
After the demise of Dinosaur Jr., Mascis picked up right where he left off, forming J. Mascis and the Fog with Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine) and Robert Pollard (Guided By Voices).
J. Mascis is working on a re-release of Dinosaur Jr.’s first three albums that have long been out of print, as well as finishing a studio in his home.
Epitonic.com described his performance as "a classic post-punk evening," sometimes joined by other equally respected rockers in his genre. "Just wear earplugs."

over here, the uk amma followers are currently trying to come up w/money making ideas to fund her london visit in october this year …
Amma was just in Toronto, caught a bit of an interview with her on national news. She talked about trying to awaken the mother in all people. The crowds looked overwhelming, tons of people lining up forever.
Sounds like he may have been working for her in a few locations, wonder what kind of music he plays for the crowds :aliensmile:

When I talked to him he did sound like anything was coming out very soon. I think he will probably record some tracks but won’t come out with a new album till after or around the reissues.

Hmm?? That is not true or is it? I think Pollard just did vocals on one track or something..?

Pollard did some backing vocals on 3 songs on More Light
