patti smith’s meltdown festival this wednesday (22june) ?
according to time out she was going to read "from her book of haunting poetry, ‘The Coral Sea’ (whose subject is the late Robert Mapplethorpe), with musical backing provided by Kevin Shields and Cat Power."

Just got back from The Coral Sea performance at Meltdown. Cat Power was the best I’ve ever seen her….did "Knocking On Heaven’s
Door". Cripes!
Kevin Shields, sitting on a sofa with a lampshade next to it, surrounded by guitars and effects pedals. All very Tom Waits. He played whilst Patti Smith read from her book about Mapplethorpe and it was incredible. Shields justified every word that has been written about his ‘genius’. I am still reeling.Back to top

fuck, that sounds amazing.Wish I’d got myself in gear to go to that.
So many people I love involved, what made me just think "naah.."? Possibly the possibility they all might have been a bit rubbish.. but obviously not.

I know what you mean. As I went in last night I said to a mate, "This could be great or it could be beyond awful"…..I’m so glad I went now. I think that the potentially more "arty" events at this year’s Meltdown have been easily as good as the conventional gigs. It’s been a real breath of fresh air to find myself surprised and impressed by a few things that I would admit sounded a bit pretentious on paper.
