Cool article, only posting half the article, the 1st half has been done to death…

you can read the whole deal @ Columbia Daily Tribune

      Quote:
Tribune: On the early records, did you work to achieve a certain sound or did it happen by accident?

Murph: Especially on "Living All Over," a lot of those sounds, we stumbled upon them. Something would happen or somebody would suggest some kind of random effect and J would be like, "Oh, let’s try that." Then it would be like, "I guess that’s cool," and we would just go with it. At the time it might have been a bigger deal, but really a lot of the stuff was just like made up on the spot, literally just trying things out.

Tribune: How did you approach songwriting as a band?

Murph: J approaches music like a composer; he kind of hears everything all at once. So when he’s writing he tends to be aware of every single thing: drums, bass, vocals, harmonies. And I think that’s different. It kind of unfolds right away, and he kind of places it together.

Tribune: So is it annoying to be in a band with someone like that?

Murph: It’s frustrating sometimes because he has the vision, and it’s up to us to interpret it, and it’s hard because J’s a super-quick study. He can bang out tracks in a few hours. He can literally lay everything down if he wants to. And it takes Lou and I a long time to interpret that, so it’s a slow process, but it’s good. Tribune: Is it hard for J to let go of control?

Murph: Not really; nowadays he’s pretty good about it. Especially live with the older songs, there are things I’ve changed ’cause it seems to flow better or it makes things easier to play for all of us, and he’s been fine. It hasn’t been a big struggle at all.

Tribune: How long do you see this lasting? What will the future hold?

Murph: Yeah, I mean, if there’s interest and things stay reasonably fresh, I don’t see why we can’t do this for a little while longer.

Tribune: I think the interest is there.

      Murph: That’s cool.

We’d have liked to tell you all about these blessed events, but Dinosaur Jr.’s publicist informed us that Mascis wasn’t talkin’ this year. Now that’s more like J.
