Let me start off by saying this may be a little long winded. You are warned.
I worked a typical 7 hour day yesterday (7 am to 2 pm, I usually work eight) and left work at 2 to head to Eugene, Or. for the Dinosaur Jr show. The drive was uneventful and gave me time to rock out to the first 4 albums on the way down.
I arrived in Eugene at around 5:45 and checked in to my motel room. After getting settled I decided to find the club the show was at. I knew it was only 2 blocks from where I was staying so I decided to walk. I walked a block down some street I thought might be the right way and am waiting to cross when I hear a screaming guitar solo off in the distance. I knew it was J. I followed the music and ended up at WOW halls back door. Dinosaur was sound checking. How lucky am I? I listened for a few minutes until they stopped, and out walked Lou and Murph. Murph started talking to some lady that worked for the hall and Lou was headed my way. I said Hi to Lou and told him it sounded great. He said thanks and we struck up a conversation. I mentioned I drove down from Seattle and he was stoked and thanked me again for coming so far for the show. We talked about Sebadohs future (which is on hold because Dinosaur is IT right now) and fatherhood. We talked for about 15-20 minutes and then Lou went to go get some dinner. Shit this was already going to be a rad show I just met LOU!
I got some dinner and went back to WOW hall thinking I might run into Murph or better yet maybe J. There was a gas station across the street so I walked over to buy a disposable camera for pictures of the show. I came back to WOW hall and started talking to the bass player in Preistess. We talked for a little bit and around the corner came J. I excused myself from the conversation I was having and said Hi to J. I don’t exactly remember how the topic came up but we started talking about jazzmasters. We talked for about 5 minutes when I asked him to take a picture with me. He said sure and the bass player from preistess took it. Holy Shit, did I just take a picture with J Mascis? I sure did and when I figure out how to post it here I will. Man, this show was going to be epic.

The show began at 9 with some local Eugene band playing. They were ok I didn’t listen much though. The merchandise for this tour is awesome! I bought the moster shirt they’ve had all along, a hat with the wagon monkey, and a Zombie Worm shirt. They are also selling a white shirt with the first album cover with the dates of this spring tour on back. There is more cool swag so you’ll have to check it out. Hopefully all this stuff will end up online at their website too.
Anyways back to the show, Preistess fucking rocked! They were awesome and I was stoked to find out about them. Does the drummer do the 5 minute drum solo every show? It was excellent I must say. So they ended their set and Dinosaur came on. Heres the set list (I got J’s by the way
)The Lung
Quest
The Wagon
Gargoyle
Little Fury Things
No Bones
Forget the Swan
Tarpit
Lose
In a Jar
Bulbs of Passion
Raisins
Freakscene
Mountain Man
Just like Heaven
SludgefeastI wasn’t dissappointed with the set list at all. It was awesome to hear Tarpit, No Bones and Lose. I asked Lou earlier in the day if they were going to play any new stuff on this tour, he said no they were going to play the same stuff as always. Still a great show.
One thing I was dissappointed about was this hall was a little smaller than a high school gymnasium and it was maybe half full! If I had to guess there was maybe only 100-150 people at the show. Lame. There did happen to be a pretty furious mosh pit during the show. I was standing right in front of J for the entire show (I got some killer pictures). I thought about what happened in Kansas and didn’t want that to happen again. So I made sure J’s mic didn’t hit him in the mouth again. I was talking with the tour manger after the show and told him what I did and he was stoked. He thanked me for looking out for J and said that crowd in Kansas was the roudiest they’ve seen this tour. He said they just got really drunk and crazy.
Anyways I just got back home earlier today and thought I would post my experience. I hope you enjoyed reading about it, if not…… sorry I wasted your time.

April 19, 2006 at 8:38 pm #116533Thanks for the story, Tonas! I love seeing how these shows compare. It sounds like you a had a great time! If you want to post the pic of you and J, you can set up an account at photobucket.com. It is free and easy. You just need to upload the file and then you can post it in the body of a message with the image button. Photobucket will provide all of the necessary html. If you still can’t get it to work, just send me an attachment and I’ll post it for you.
My husband and I are flying into Portland next month and then driving down through Eugene and onto Napa and San Fran. I’ve never been to the west coast so if you have an tips on where to hang-out (ie places for shows, vegetarian restaurants, etc) please let me know.
The tour manager is a nice guy. I don’t know his name, but he seems to be super friendly. It is really cool that you talked to Lou and J. Did you get anything signed? Good thing you made that drive!!
April 19, 2006 at 9:37 pm #116534I got autographs from J, Lou, & Murph last August in Seattle. So I wasn’t looking for them this time around. The west coast is rad, its way laid back. I don’t know Oregon or California that well so I can’t help you with places to go. Sorry.
Thanks for the advice about the pics, I’ll try to do that this weekend.
April 19, 2006 at 10:34 pm #116535For Bette Davis Lies:
I currently live in San Francisco and there is tons of shit to do here. If interested I can tell you some places to check out, but of course, lots of first time visitors want to do the touristy things- Alcatraz, ChinaTown, etc- which I recommend at least once.
Going to see Dinosaur tonight and tomorrow- hopefully better then last year’s performance in Cleveland.

I was talking about the African-American man with glasses. He is probably in his 40s if I had to guess. I really like him. (Picture on my blog)
April 19, 2006 at 11:35 pm #116538Oh and the other guy with the long hair and the accent – I think his name is RJ or something like that.. I know who you are talking about. He is from the Netherlands and he is also very friendly. He is just doing sound. Actually, I don’t know anyone connected to dinosaur that has been rude.. That really makes me appreciate them even more. I would hate to think that my favorite band was comprised of assholes and rock star types.. I am simply not hip enough for that myself. It gives hope to us geeky types!

I definetly would love to know more about San Fran. Sadly, I probably will be spending a fair amount of time doing the tourist thing.. If nothing else, I just want ride a trolley and see the golden gate.
April 20, 2006 at 6:45 am #116539that sounds awesome man.

and i bought that black t-shirt with three weirding drawerings of the band and it says (Lou, J, Murph – Reunion Tour 2005)
April 20, 2006 at 10:25 am #116540Wow that sound like one hell of a night, glad you had such a great time.
I really hope I get to meet J, Lou and Murph when I see them next month. I really want some autographs and pictures… I can’t wait. From the stories I’ve read so far from you guys it seems that J just walks around the venues, is this true? I really hope so…. can’t believe you got a set list too. Sounds like a dream I had
April 20, 2006 at 11:14 am #116541I just want a postcard
April 20, 2006 at 1:10 pm #116542nice pic !
J’s all nice and noisy like he should be

J is always walking around the venue, especially after the show. He never seems to mind signing things or taking pics. Granted, he is a quiet guy who has little to say, but this should never be mistaken for rocknrollroyalty syndrome. I am sure he would be happy to sign an album or something. What show are you going to see?
April 20, 2006 at 2:58 pm #116544Thanks for your reply, I really hope I get to meet J and get my YLAOM signed.
I’m going to the show in Manchester (England). I saw them at leeds festival last year which was amazing but I can’t wait to see them play a longer set and be stood alot closer to them. Hopefully they might bust out a new track, tht would be awesome

I shot this a few yrs ago … definitely worth the bleary-eyed wakeup.
