Sebadoh III: Part II; Dinosaur Jr Not Extinct just yet

Domino recently released an expanded version of Sebadoh’s Sebadoh III, a record that still stands as one of the best examples of the early ‘90s “lo-fi/no-fiâ€

Agree but I’ll take it a step further and say I hope it’s more original Dinosaur and less Foggy. I’d just rather these three guys keep a unique sound. I don’t expect it to sound like the 80s stuff but I hope it does sound unique.

I hope its a cross between YLAOM and Bug. It would be great for an album that sounded like that to come out now. Amazing how those older albums have stood the test of time and still sound relevant today.

It think the album might be heavier because of Lou is back. If he uses his Rickenbacker bass, and creates the heavy sound he does live, this will be very cool. the bass wil be an important part in the songs just like on You’re living all over me and Bug. I think the bass was much more camuflaged on where you been and without a sound, then on You’re living all over me and Bug. At least I hope some songs will have heavy fuzz guitar riffs/chords and heavy bass. I think the album will be good. But I hope J sings not only with "help me Amma" emotion, but also gives a little damn about it all, and makes a rock and roll song, without too much emotions in it. It’d be cool if he could growl a little like on Peebles + weed, and The little baby.

my theory is that the new album will sound like J and the Fog with Lou playing bass and Murph playing drums.
the interviews i’ve read here say the new stuff is ‘mellower’, and Lou’s said that the band is basically J’s deal, so i doubt the songs are going to be all ’85 or anything like that. J writes songs the way he wants to write them, and if the new stuff was overly inspired by playing the first three albums again, i’d imagine the other band members to describe the stuff as anything but ‘mellow’.

no matter what it sounds like, the new Dinosaur stuff will be great rock music for sure.

This, and a little Hand It Over in there, my guess… ;)

i think and hope it will sound like nothing we have heard before.
because no one has-‘cept the band-which is as it should be.
knowing a little about the iffyness of the rock world and all its ups&downs it will be a nice surprise when/if it gets released :)

Don’t count on it. I wish the same thing but I don’t see them playing that fast anymore. I would like it to sound like Bug and also sound like new stuff too.

I guess the hope is since they’ve been playing old stuff for a year straight now, maybe its influence will rub off on new songs. Sure it’ll sound like J’s newer stuff (guitar playing and singing) but hopefully with Murph and Lou back it will have that "classic" Dinosaur feel. That would be awesome!

One of the first practices we ever had, Murph and I went over to J’s house, and J is sitting there with this new really high wattage amp that he had just bought. He was just sitting there and all of a sudden he just laid on his ‘Big Muff’ and we were like ‘OH MY FUCKING GOD!’ He literally had construction blast earmuffs on and Murph and I were scrambling around the house shoving toilet paper, or whatever we could find, into our ears,â€

Thats pretty rad J’s going to release it on his own label. Is that the Baked Goods one? Hopefully he has good distribution and it will be easy to find.

Love the idea as well, no doubt they’ll sell a lot at shows, wonder if they’ll try the digital download deal.

Here’s a very brief bit from Murph on J’s songwriting process for the album, although I’m not sure what it means… ;)

                                  Quote:
On the songwriting process, Murphy doesn’t predict any uncharacteristic political diatribes or sudden bursts of electronica. "J still has his J quirkiness. He’s one of those people who decide ‘that makes a good song.’ Maybe someone can take something from it and go, ‘Oh wow, I can relate to that.’

"J’s kind of vague about meanings, but his approach is the same, I think."
