Huey Lewis & The News – Sports (LOL… Just Kidding!)May 3, 2006 at 9:38 am #116875I think those continuing to improve could include Wilco (though I like Yankee the best so far and thought Ghost was a bit of a let-down) but generally speaking, I tend to like the album I owned first the best. Not always, but most of the time. I think for favorite bands, it’s the first album that grabs you so much you want to check out the other stuff. The other stuff, then, can’t live up to the expectations created when you first heard the band.
For me, I first owned Where You Been and it’s always been my favorite. I love the other stuff but to me, that’s Dinosaur’s best. Same with Radiohead, I got OK Computer first, it’s my favorite. I find this trend with a lot of bands I’m into.

Mudhoney – Mudhoney
Black Sabbath – Master Of Reality
Butthole Surfers – Locust Abortion Technician

Pixies – Surfer Rosa
Radiohead – The Bends
Smashing Pumpkins – Siamese Dream
Soundgarden – Badmotorfinger
Sonic Youth – GooMay 3, 2006 at 11:05 am #116877I think Screaming Trees were a far better band at the end of their career than at the beginning — Uncle Anesthesia, Sweet Oblivion, and Dust all blew away their earlier material. But they’re a rare exception to the general "peaking early" rule.
May 3, 2006 at 11:21 am #116878I love those albums but I got their first few a while back and Invisible Lantern and Buzz Factory are amazing. I just got a little tired of Sweet Oblivion and Dust after listening to them solidly for about 4 years and I needed some more Trees and at the moment Buzz Factory is much more fresh and exciting for me than the latter albums.
May 3, 2006 at 11:28 am #116879If you can find it get the EP they did on Sub Pop. It’ll probably be hard to find, but he best song the trees ever recorded is on that EP. Its called Time Speaks Her Golden Tongue. I asked Van (Conner – Bass) one time if they were ever going to play it live, and he told me probably not, because they didn’t want to fuck it up. I don’t think they ever did either. Anyways thats the record to get. I like the sst stuff too though.

Yeah 13 Songs is the best Fugazi

Hum`s Downward… is a `90s classic
Nice to see someone that remembers Pond.I like the debut alot
Pony Express Record is Shudder`s best moment I think though Get Your Goat is cool too.
I`ll go back and add more to my list

Your first impression will always govern your opinion of a band, good or bad.
May 3, 2006 at 5:12 pm #116883Nice Thread SG. I’ll have to think about it. The early is young wild and exiting and later sometimes crappppp but often more balance and more space for beauty, just like me ofcourse
