I let my friend listen to the song "out there" and he loved it. Of course, we wanted to know how he got the fuzzed up distortion. Sorry if its a dumb question, I just got hooked on dinosaur jr. a few months ago.

I don’t know the answer. J uses different guitars when recording. He uses Fender Jazzmaster on Out there live, but could be he used something else in the studio.

As for amp and effects… no clue what amp is used.
I guess the sound J uses live on this song is quite similar to the studio recording. You might get a similiar sound with a big muff. but you have to try different eq positions on your amp, and maybe combine the big muff with so and so much pre amp gain. and then find out how much you should turn the big muff knobs.

so I guess, you can try with different amp eq settings and a big muff..
