After seeing them on the reunion tour i was introduced to a whole new set of great songs off hte first record, but when i got the record i felt like the songs weren’t nearly as powerful as they were live. Is anyone with me on this ? Im not saying the first record sounds bad, just that when they do songs like "forget the swan", "bulbs of passion", "repulsion", "gargoyle" and "mountain man" that they sound more amazing on this tour.

May 22, 2006 at 2:14 pm #117704They definately sound way better live. Sonically it’s night and day. Too bad we don’t have studio recordings of those currently. That sure would be way cool.
May 22, 2006 at 2:49 pm #117705You have to keep in mind that the guys were really young when the made the first record and they’re all way better musicians now. I like the first album but agree that the songs are just better live. Especially Bulbs.
May 22, 2006 at 4:34 pm #117706I love listening to the first album but the songs are more powerful live with all the effects and J’s amazing extended solos. Mountain Man is probably my favorite dino song live because the solos are just insane and there’s so much energy in the song. I always find I listen to the live versions of bulbs and leper from the BBC Sessions more than the album versions, they sound so good.

May 23, 2006 at 7:40 pm #117709Absolutely true! I like Dino’s first album. It’s a solid debut. But let’s face it, the sound wa abit weak and the recording was not mixed very well. It could have used a lot more distortion. besides, the band is in better shape now than they were 20 years ago (musically anyway, J’s pretty chubby) and they are more focused now more than ever.
July 24, 2006 at 11:09 am #117710Although I like a few songs here and there, I’m not a huge fan of the first album. Whenever I try to give it a chance, I always find myself kind of getting bored and wishing that I was listening to YLAOM or Green Mind. To me, it’s just a little quiet, slow and somewhat stale but when I saw them play live last year, it was completely different. "Gargoyle" in particular sounds much better live because J’s guitar part is actually in-your-face, like he’s known for. But yeah, I agree, they sound much much better live.
August 31, 2006 at 12:06 am #117711Absolutely they are better played live. The recordings sound really underdeveloped to me. The sound is a little flat and the music sounds a bit uninspired. Plus, the band has grown a lot since they recorded that album so they had more time to perfect the songs.
December 26, 2006 at 8:19 pm #117712Yea, they are better live, but, this may be a little off topic…but…I find it weird that Dino’s first album was rough, and when Lou broke loose his debut album III was rough too, but then you get bands like weezer who had an album that sounds like it couldve been recorded today.
Just an observation…hey, ill start a topic bout this!
January 20, 2007 at 11:28 pm #117713there are a lot of weezer references here. i went to the weezernation forum for that
February 1, 2007 at 2:31 pm #117714I love how the first album sounds. The band playing those songs live is just like a supercharged version! I love how the first and second records have those volume dynamics. Sometimes they sound a bit amatuerish(the mixes) but have such life and color compared to much of today. Bands don’t have flangers and wahs swooping across the frequency spectrum. They sound huge but lack some of the dynamics Dino has in spades.
