Besides J, who else has influenced or inspired you to play guitar?

      In no particular order:

      Ace Frehley (KISS)
      Jimi Hendrix
      Steve Turner (Mudhoney)
      Gary Lee Conner (Screaming Trees)
      Wade Neil (Seaweed)
      Clint Werner (Seaweed)
      Rick McCollum (Afghan Whigs)
      Rivers Cuomo (Weezer)
      Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters)
John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers)

Kurt Cobain and Slash were the main reason i bought a guitar when i was about 11. My favorite guitarists apart from J are Jerry Cantrell, Thurston and Lee, Kim Thayil, Jimi Hendrix, King Buzzo, Billy Corgan. I admire Kirk Hammets solos but I’m not really interested in that style.

J is the biggest, but besides him…

Thurston& Lee, Tom Verlaine, Bob Mould, Hendrix, John Frusciante, Ira Kaplan, Neil Young, Curt Kirkwood, Kevin Shields.

can’t think of anymore right now.

I don’t remember exactly what it was that made me want to play guitar, but it was probably Weezer’s Blue Album…since that’s what got me into music.

As a guitar player I’d say in addition to J, I rip off D. Boon, Malkmus, and Don Pyle alot.

                  Hey SG,

Thanks for the link to the Sharrock and yeah, he’s Awesome.

If you haven’t heard it I recommmend you check out "Ayler Undead" by Eugene Chadbourne.
As you might expect, it’s Chadbourne covering Ayler tunes on electric guitar and banjo with a drummer and bassist. It’s wicked and I think it would quite probably be your cup of tea.

J along with Ecstacy era MBV and Sister era Sonic youth, probably Psychocandy too was what made me pick up a guitar.

I play tenor sax too and that’s because I heard Ayler and got jealous.

I don’t own any John Fahey. I really need to buy some.

Thanks for the Chadbourne recommendation. He`s alot of fun.I like his version of the Achey Breaky Heart :D I did`nt know he did an Ayler tribute.

The Fahey album you should check out:Days Have Gone By(1966)it`s a home recording I think.Lots of reverb and some found sounds like trains and thunder added in.One of the best guitar records there is.

I hear/read "Days Have Gone By" recommended quite often. Thanks SG, this will be the next CD I own.

Nirvana’s "Nevermind" got me into music, then about 3 years later of discovering music (mostly Nirvana) i wanted to play the songs i loved (which at the time was mostly Nirvana again lol). So i guess it was mostly Kurt Cobain that influenced me to pick up a guitar. After learning many Nirvana songs i started discovering loads of other music and now i have albums by 244 different bands now. I know he’s hated by a lot of people but if it weren’t for old Kurt or "Nevermind" i wuda been a totally different person, probably a "chav" or a "townie" or a "jock" wateva you call them wherever you live.

Yeh I feel exactly the same way, I wouldn’t be the same person if it wasn’t for Nirvana, they saved me from becoming a sheep like all my friends when I was alot younger. Thanks to them I’ve found alot of new bands and met alot of new people so even though I don’t listen to them anymore I’ll always have a huge amount of respect for them.

When I started to play guitar I learnt every single nirvana song but it takes me a while to remember them now. The only tab book I ever got was alice in chains – dirt and it was really helpful for the solos as I sucked. Then for along time I just played my own stuff but recently I’ve tabbed out some Dinosaur Jr and I can see a big improvement in my playing now.

I’ve been playing for about 6 years now…. just curious how long have u guys been playing roughly?

I got a guitar (Peavey Patriot) and a little Peavey practice amp for Christmas 1985. I began lessons in January of 1986. I took lessons for a few years on and off and have been playing ever since. I was in the 6th grade when I started. I really didn’t play that much for the first couple of years because I was so into sports, and typical little kid stuff. Around 10th grade (15 or 16) is when I got full blown into guitar. At the time I was seeing all these local bands play in these small clubs that made me want to play to. You may have geard of some of them as they got huge a few years later (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden).

So I guess as of this last January I’ve been playing for 20 years, wow I hadn’t thought about it before…… Jeez I would think I’d be better than I am by now. Oh well ;D

I know what you mean… I started playing in 1977… that’s 29 years! That’s longer than the other guys in my band have even been alive! Doesn’t even seem possible.

basically this minus ace frehlyey and the guys from seaweed. Um, the song "Everlong" was the first song I was able to play on guitar. And the weirdest thing is… the two songs that got me wanting to start playing guitar were both acoustic songs.

The first song was oasis’s wonderwall
The second was the song "Radical Dreamers" from the game chrono cross. Yes, I am a loser. but I still like that song.

and hotel california made me want to play guitar too.

i’ve only been playing for 2 years, which is nothing compared to most of you guys.
