what is the best way to learn this? i’ve been reading lessons on ultimate-guitar on major/minor scales (for solos) and even when they stat that the lesson is EASY, i can’t understand it. does anyone have a link to where someone explains really well? its driving me insane.

This isn’t a site, but I would honestly suggest a knowledgable teacher. It’s good because they can put things into different words and show you.

I learned theory from a guitar one magazine. It was really weird becuase I was having the hardest time trying to understand how everything fit. I had learned these major and minor scales and the different modes, but I just didn’t get how it all worked. One read through that article and the lightbulb went off. I got it. I asked some friends who knew theory some questions to make sure I understood it, and I did. It was like I became a way better guitar player over night. So maybe find a good article that explains it, and shows examples. Thats how I learned.

            http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/lessons/for_beginners/learning_music_theory_the_beginning.html”>http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/lessons/ … nning.html

i bet they’re really great, but they do absolutely nothing for me except giving me a headache.

Yeah it was an article like that. Maybe it was different for me because I knew all that stuff I just didn’t know how to put it all together. I agree reading that shit and trying to understand it just makes playing the guitar laim. All I ever wanted to do with the guitar is rock. One thing to watch out for though is that when I learned all these ‘rules’ it limited my playing because I was always analyzing it. I lost creativity because all I wanted to do was write a brilliant technical guitar part. The part of me that picked up a guitar and played a distorted open A chord and thought it sounded amazing was gone. It took me a long time to get that point of view back. I still struggle with it. Sometimes I watch J and I’m like that is so simple but it rocks so hard………. Anyways I’m being long winded now. Good luck Rage. :)

Yea, be careful of this. When I started playing guitar a few years ago I hadn’t gotten into alot of the music I like now, so I was listening to alot of Led Zeppelin and T. Rex and stuff. It took me a long time to get over playing lame bluesy chord progressions and solos.

yeah, i actually thought about that. i’ll watch out for it, but hopefully one day i can just bust out a song and improve and not having to worry about which note to play. and all i’ve ever wanted to do was make music that i want to hear and jam.

well, hopefully one day it’ll finally click to me because i just wanna rock.

check this for some decent scales:
                    http://www.freakscene.net/forums/discussion/7427
also check http://www.guitartricks.com I put a couple of things up on there before they started making you pay (jerks) under the lame name "grunger".
I fell into that void after I started playing actual scales. I found that when I write solos I was embarrased when I would write a Kurt style solo. However when I incorporated scales and modes or whatever to my songs…..I was still embarrased. I haven’t been all about solos since I was 9 and got my first guitar. Right now I’m in a 2 or 3 year writing block, I do much better when I get with my band cranked up and just improv. a new song, then record a rough version. I then listen to that and make changes, and repeat the process until I’m happy with it.

Whats up with all of these "Fake" books…."how to fake". ? Fake what? Is that talking about improv-ing?

I wish I could be happy again with anything or any noise that comes out of me…..I used to write like at LEAST a song a day….keeper or not. Now I’m around a song a month…keeper or not. Sad sad sad.

                    RJ.

I know what you mean about the creativity thing, i started playing guitar just so i could learn every Nirvana song and thats but a big lock on my creativity when I finally wanted to write my own songs. It’s taken me about 4 years to actually get my own style which i’m happy with.

The way I started to improvise was by using notes that i knew from solos that i had learnt. By figuring out quite alot of Dinosaur Jr solos i just use the scale that the majority of those solos are on, i don’t know the name of it though. I’m getting more and more confident soloing now which is good and I think listening to J helped me alot, I hope you can figure it out anyway Rage:man

"It’s like when you’re cooking and you’ve got a nice loaf in the oven and it’s not quite done yet, but you’re really excited for it." – Buckethead.

I know people around here aren’t too crazy about the idea of fingertapping and Yngwie and rocket ships or pac man. I think though that there is a lot to learn and I would like to learn as much as I can. I’ll never stop learning, I’ll never know everything about the guitar Ive spent almost 14 years playing. Les Paul is still learning (or is he dead?). You can’t (I think) limit yourself to waht you learn. I say learn the things you dont really even like. If you learn chicken pickin’ and then use a pick, you’ll see that you can play with your middle, ring, and pinky as well while playing with the pick. You can play a rythm part with your fretting hand and then go over it with a solo with your picking hand by doing taps/slides/and hammer ons and pull offs. I even learn some death metal stuff, which Im not really into, just because there are influences from everywhere if that makes sense at all. Don’t stick to playing one type of music. Branch out and touch bluegrass or jazz or blues or whatever.
