I have an IBM craptop I have abused the hell out of for 5 years and it is still ticking (think Anthony has one of the same models) and I also use a Dell Lattitude D600 (which is one of the ones with a faulty battery) but I have abused it as well and it works just fine.

I am looking into one of the new macbook pros for my next purchase but I’m giving it a couple more months for them to iron out the kinks (like the Thermal Paste). They do seem pretty nice though. Watt pretty much sold me on apple years ago but I wanted more horsepower. Now that they have delivered, I have no excuse.

The Dell & Mac both both seem to have problems but I would like to be able to run osx & windows on the same box without jumping through hoops.

I also have an emachine tower and I have had zero problems with it. – want to know a dirty little secret – Dell owns them too :)
I have not seen there laptops anywhere but I have been impressed with the desktop.

** f*** me. just realized that almost every sentence started with I. back to writing 101 with me.

I have a new macbook(not pro,) and so far I´m very pleased. Running xp in osx works like a charm and has made my life a lot easier as I don´t need to have one computer for personal use, and one for work. + I must admit that such a silly thing as the remote control makes me smile. Depending on what you´re using your computers for a used powerbook might be an option. The last sentence might be all jumbly, but I´m too tired right now to try to make it better. Good luck in your search !

thanks for the input, folks…..keep it comin’ :) i’m not a gamer, but i do likes my music..i’ll mostly be using thi s machine for boring academic reasons..(statistical software, and economic analyses), but would like it to be able to handle cool graphics stuff if need be…i thought about a mac..(my sis is an apple freak..), but i’m a bit gunshy to learning a whole new OS..

The biggest difference for me when I made the jump was that osx is set up to function more intuitively, and it was kind of hard to "unlearn," the more dogmatic flow of windows. This lasted for about 2 days though. And it seems to me that osx will let you modify a lot of things a lot easier than windows. Hardcore tech heads might be able to confirm or deny this. What I use my machine for is pretty much boring academic stuff as well + some photoshopping, layout etc. At home I have a macmini hooked connected to a flatscreen tv and that takes care of all my computer needs, no gaming though.
If you read through some of my posts in this forum you will see that windows pretty much killed me numerous times. I´m using my macs for exactly the same stuff, but they haven´t as much as threatened to misbehave once. So I have to say that your sister is a clever girl.

thanks again for all the input, folks. robert….when i was first introduced to computers (in the internet age…no commodore 64s ;) ) i learned my way around the web and word processing and spreadsheets and the like all on macs……but the evil empire (windows) soon took over. but i haven’t laid a finger on a mac since. i am giving some serious thought to switching over though…and damn are those powerbooks sexy ;)

I just wanted to add that if the OS is really the driver and money is an deciding factor you could use a linux distro for free. Ubuntu is very nice and super easy to install. You actually test drive it by running it from your cd before you commit to an install. I have this on an old HP and it picked up everything (including my wireless card and network) without me having to install or tinker with it at all. Just wanted to through that back out there too :)

I’m kicking around on a Dual-Core Thinkpad T60, dual-boot windows xp and Kanotix 2006-Easter Edition.

I also have a Thinkpad T23, kicking around with Kanotix as well.

Thinkpads are my favorite laptops of all time, and Kanotix is free!

thanks again folks….well i think i’ve made up my mind regarding the pc/mac conundrum..and i’ve decided to stick with the old pc. so now all i have to do is wade through a gazillion options like brand, price, system bells and whistles..yada,yad,yada.. i’m not sure why, but i keep coming back to dell…they have some screamin’ good deals on machines that would more than adequately meet my needs. although there are a few swet thinkpads that are comparable in price and function….

decision making has never been one of my best traits…..

I got a alienware laptop, I’ve never been so happy with a machine in my life.

so if anyone cares…..after much hand wringing and deep contemplation, i scrapped the whole laptop idea and bought a new desktop. you can just get so much more bang for yer buck with a desktop, and still have room to upgrade when the time comes. haven’t decided what i’m gonna do with the old machine…any cool mad scientist-like ideas are welcome… ;)
