well, there are only 2 months left in 2006, it’s about time to start seeing the annual parade of "best of" lists. personally, i have a ton of releases from this year that i have yet to listen to, so i’d better get busy. but here are a few of my favorites so far:

son volt – okemah & the melody of riot (this might be 2005, but it’s new to me. and great!)
      decemberists – the crane wife
long winters – putting the days to bed
mission of burma – the obliterati
neko case – fox confessor brings the flood
avett brothers – four thieves gone…

i’ll add more as they come to mind….

i haven’t heard this album but i’ve seen these guys twice and was blown away both times.

as for the best of 2006, i’m not sure if Fiona Apple’s album was this year but it was amazing and also that Raconteurs album is pretty good and i haven’t heard all of Yo La Tengo’s album but i’m sure it will be on this list when i find the money, time and play to buy it.

Not a classic year in the grand scheme of things (imo) – but in the "Underground" I think its been a stormer with some of the "Old Guard" showing the "Young Pups" how it’s done!!:) Enough with the "inverted commas" – sorry! :)

I gave The Greatest a listen again yesterday and whilst it has a few storming tunes I kinda think that You Are Free is a much better album…. I dunno… Cat Power is great n’all but The Greatest seems a little empty compared to YAF, like some of the songs are sketches as opposed to being fully realised. The whole Memphis/Ardent thing as well – not knocking the folks chops or anything and maybe it’s testament to their abilities that they don’t go and play all over the record (and really ruin it) but I think that side of it just added to the ‘story’ and maybe fuelled the record company PR machine. I don’t think it really brings much to her as an…. ‘artist’. But hey! I still dig this record so I should shut up right?

and can I say that the single of the year is by a band called Fields with a track called ‘If You Fail We All Fail’ and it’s out on the 20th Nov ta :)

i put my vote in for My Chemical Romance=the black parade

a late comer, but a great sound.. and the lead singer is so cool…
they give me a feel of radiohead put together with joy division!!

they are probably one my favotire bands of the last few years…
