I think Murph uses Gretsch drums and his cymbals I think are Paiste. He plays a 4 piece typically with a crash ride, crash cymbal, and a high hat. I know in the past he played a double bass pedal and the first time I saw him in 1989 he had a yellow drum set with 2 bass drums, in 1991 he was playing a red Gretsch Blackhawk set with a double bass pedal he used a few times in several songs both new and old for the Green Mind tour. On the Green Mind tour when I saw him, they had Murph in the front and center of the stage at the Cotton Club, a small club in Atlanta. Murph gets great sound on his kits and he plays very solid.

I like his clear blue drums. Are they newer ones, or are they the old Vistalites? I love those, they are my favorite looking drum set….looking because I’ve never played them. I like my Sonor Force 2000 set though a lot. I’m glad no one stole those from me…..they just stold everything else, even the hardware…….bass turds!!!!

I have found some Gretsch drums on Ebay for $289 buy it now from this guy with a music store. He has a lot of these all the time, I dont know how much shipping is but I think it was reasonable for a kit. I may look into it, no harm in having too much gear. ;D

It depends. Usually bands "hire" a drumkit for tours. I’ve seen Murph use various drumsets over the past. I think the drums he plays at home (which are HIS drums, I guess) are the red Gretsch-kit (with the scratched high-tom), the same gear he used back in the 80s that J found on ebay before the reunion started. The kick-drum is a different & bigger one than back in the day. It has either a Gretsch-logo or a Ludwig-logo on the front skin, but I believe it’s always the same basic (Gretsch) drum. For the reunion, I’ve seen Murph use at least 6 different kits (they played Europe 3 times in 2005, the first leg of the tour had Murph playing the original Dinosaur Gretsch kit, the second was a green-looking set, the third had a maple finish or something), in Japan/Australia 2006 he played another different kit (also with a maple-looking finish), for the spring 2006 US tour I’ve seen pix where he plays a clear "see-through" kit (I heard that J has/had one ?), and a 6th kit (black with a white-sparkle ring on the drums) for the spring 2006 European tour. I think he ALWAYS uses Paiste 2002 cymbals. They sound amazing ! But are quite expensive.

What set was the yellow double bass drum set I saw Murph use at the 9:30 Club Feb 20, 1989? I also looked and looked for a recording of that show but it might be a lost treasure. There was a guy filming the show that night.

Murphs new kit is a C&C kit. He’s really stoked on it, I like the green and purple sparkle finish
