obviously after Lou broke away from the original lineup in 1989, the music that followed j became much lighter than that of the earlier albums, and j veered away from the harder rockish stuff, and im just curious if anyone thinks that this album is going to have
the old Dino sound, or sound just like the stuff of of hand it over which can easily be told apart from YLAOM or Bug. thanksJanuary 10, 2007 at 1:36 pm #124715I don’t really know but J’s new track to me seemed like a continuation of J Mascis and The Fog not really like the early stuff. Lou’s sounded alot more like the earlier stuff, I really loved that track and can’t wait to hear a studio version. I’m hoping it sounds like the earlier stuff but I’m sure it’s gonna be good whatever it is.
January 11, 2007 at 8:15 am #124716Yeh I would just say Back To Your Heart is kind of like another Lose, it has a couple of solos, some ace riffs and just generally kicks ass. I think I read Lou has written 2 song so maybe the other is another poledo

… I would love that

The same can be said of the post-Green Mind era, but the songs never really got as hard as Gargoyle, Lose, Don’t or Mountain Man. The post Green Mind era, Where You Been thru Hand It Over, seems to be flashier recordings. J is showing off more his ability to keep a solo going and going without making it boring.Yeah, he did that with Forget the Swan at the Rebel Club. Maybe they should rehash one of their old songs and put it on the new album

He’s OK, thanks. Maybe he had too much of… me?
No, he didn’t drool.
We didn’t get to see the second night, even though he told me I should go back to catch the rest of the show–I was too worried about his health.February 8, 2007 at 7:58 am #124720i haven’t been keeping track of the new album, but i’ve heard its leaked and its called "Beyond".
February 8, 2007 at 10:01 pm #124721My friend got the tracks to the new album and sent them to me. It is indeed called "Beyond" and so far, after listening to the album as a whole, I can’t find a reason to like it. For those who had hoped that they’d have a more aggressive, powerful sound due to the old lineup, I am sorry to inform you but it just isn’t happening on this album. The main feel I got from the album was "Without a Sound" but with a greater classic rock influence. There’s some guitar solos, but most are just very standard and don’t do enough to keep the listener’s attention. My main problem with the album so far is that it’s got that post-Green Mind underlying sadness that plagued the later albums. I’ve only given it one listen so it could potentially grow on me…I think my expectations were a little too high :-.

Quote:First thoughts about the new Dinosaur Jr. record…Yes. Yes. Y-E-S. Dinosaur Jr. is back with Beyond – Fat Possum on May 1st. I was initially scared… very scared. I mean, getting the gang back together after a long, ugly break-up has the potential for a disasterbacle. First, you hear all their gear gets looted. Then you hear that Nike is putting out a horrible purple Dinosaur Jr high top. These seemed like signs to me. Purple hightops, people caring about the band, losing gear, 30 foot wall of flame. All signs of the 2pacolypse. I mean, wasn’t this the same band that no one every really liked? Then, we talked to Lou, and he was in love the record and more importantly, the process. What can we say, it was infectious.
Dinosaur Jr. was an interesting bag for me. My friend Goose (named after Gossage) was huge into the band, and gave me some discs (I fell in love with Bug and You’re Living All Over Me), but it was years after they had already created their best material. In Halifax, you more or less waited for the Wedge to come on to see that kick ass video, Feel the Pain, but in your heart you knew it wasn’t their best work. I mean, Lou had been kicked out of the band for years and J was pretty well running a one man press.
Well, I finally got to hear the record and was not let down in the slightest. Lou and J are back. The record is like comfort food. Huge guitars, and J still decides he needs to rip off 45 second solos. Oh – and lots of sweet, sweet noise. This record could have been dropped into their catalog seamlessly, but it’s not like the songs sound dated at all. After a few listens, I’m pleasantly surprised. We’re Not Alone is a slice of mastery.
Full review will come after I have time to soak it all in, but any fan should be excited
