A continuation of Livingbug`s thread.Robert`s thoughts on Weezer got me thinking about a couple of bands I like that went in a bad direction. Both bands I`m mentioning did`nt hit mainstream so I thought another thread would be an idea. Here goes:

Bettie Serveert-the first 5 albums were great in my book. The last 2 albums Attagirl and Stripped Bare Naked seem to me to be some sort of adult contemp take on their sound. Not much good on either.Carol does`nt to be singing like she used to either. She never had a amazing voice or range but a sweet/tough voice I really like.

Guided By Voices-Under The Bushes in 1996 was the last really great record they did.Earthquake Glue was`nt too bad I guess. What the hell happened? From Same Place The Fly Got Smashed to Under The Bushes they were unbeatable in their sloppy/slacker approach to the rock and roll history book.

        SG,
I sort of agree with you regarding GBV. There’s songs I love on all the albums after UTBUTS, but I think he should’ve been a little less self documenting, skipped on the "lesser," songs and released maybe 3-4 albums instead of 6. And god knows, and jaylst I guess, how many other R.P. albums was released during the same period. But I guess he wouldn’t be able to not release almost everything he records, and that’s his decision. Everywhere with helicopter is a fantastic song, so I’m glad he continued, and still continues to make records.

        Tony,
the best bad religion album is 80-85. For real.

Good call on Bettie Serveert. I loved Palomine, but the last couple albums do have an adult music vibe to them.

As far as Weezer goes, I think most people are too hard on them. I think they are a great pop band. I really like the first 3 albums, and dont listen to much else.

Radiohead is the band that went wrong for me. I used to love them. They were my 2nd favorite band. The Bends was awesome. Probably my favorite album of the 90’s. The debut album is actually very solid, and quite underrated too. OK Computer was incredible. They could move a person to tears with their live shows, and looked like the sky was the limit.

I havent liked an album theyve put out since. Each album has a few good tracks, but I’m always disappointed.

Awhile back I was watching the Fabchannel concert from 2003,they`re certainly not a mediocre band at that show. They played Leg for like 10 minutes,it just wailed. Then I watched a 2004 show, not up to snuff there.Maybe they`ll get out of their rut next album.
Bad Religion I was into for awhile then drifted away from them.Maybe someday I`ll revive my interest.

I got into GBV around when Alien Lanes came out in `95.I was just blown away. There was`nt any other band in the underground rock scene at that time like them.Early Genesis meets The Beatles meets Barrett era Pink Floyd meets Cheap Trick done up with production worse than Pavement and Sebadoh by guys from Ohio that sang in fake brit accents with mundane day jobs was just really weird. When the Bull Dog Skin single came out I knew it was a new direction and damn I did`nt like it.Tobin Sprout`s departure was a big loss,he was like Mick Jones to Pollard`s Joe Strummer. The new guys like Doug Gillard were great musicians but the old GBV seemed a little watered down save for the odd brilliant song.Yes,I`m glad he`s still making records and I agree he makes too many records too often. As my friend on another site said,in 20 years those old GBV albums will be praised like the Velvet Underground and The Stooges are today but Pollard will probably be dead then.
