Guys,
I recently purchased a new American made Jazzmaster
. I’m really happy with it so far and it’s a blast to play.I’m used to playing my Les Paul with hotter humbuckers. When I solo I would like to have more kick (distortion) because I think the Jazz requires this. Right now I’m using a Big Muff pedal.
I noticed when Jay plays the lung and he kicks in with the G D C bit, he hits a pedal and his distortion is amplified.
Any ideas on how to achieve this?
Thanks
February 5, 2007 at 3:29 am #125566I think for that little extra bite he stomps on a HBE Germania Treble Booster.

(does that work?)
if you see him stepping off and stomping on a wee purple box that is not the Bradshaw box, it’s this – I think
I may be wrong! But he does use one anyways.
ta!February 5, 2007 at 9:24 am #125567Yep its his germania pedal. He also has a custom box that takes his Big Muff to 50% for rythm, and back up to 100% for solos. That probably has a lot to do with it too.
February 5, 2007 at 11:02 am #125568The G – D – C bit of the Lung – I have to admit it may be my favourite bit of ‘guitar/music/Mascis’ whatever…. it just rocks so hard. I can even play it on my trusty Jazzmaster!

i thought he used a super hard on until some point and then lee took it?
i use a ds1 with my muff (simply because i dont have anything else as a boost) to boost my solos and it works okay. i think you basically need another distortion pedal, like a rat or something.
February 5, 2007 at 3:50 pm #125570You use a DS1 to boost? I used my friends once and it had a huge volume drop.
Nice sound though.
February 7, 2007 at 1:28 am #125571yeah, to boost the big muff. its okay with no volume drop. and sometimes the blue box with the blend turned all the way up so the octaves don’t shift
February 8, 2007 at 1:42 pm #125572For me the key to using the muff is to dime it.(All three knobs full on) I don’t recommend standing in front of the amp after this, but to get that trebly, glassy, gorgeous sound w/o booster, it’s the only way IMO.(I’m using something different right now, but have used the muff for years. ) When I used to use the muff, I tried to dial a thick Pumpkins sound. It sounded great by itself but got lost in the mix. The dimed muff just becomes explosive through a nice tube amp.
I’m using a Boss Super Overdrive for an OD and boost to distortion. Main dist. is the Eh HotTubes(recent)February 9, 2007 at 9:58 am #125573Talking about the HBE Germania:I´m thinking about getting one….Is there big difference between the "Standard" and the OC44-version?Soundwise i mean?
February 9, 2007 at 10:45 am #125574I remember reading in one of Sweeney’s posts about it and that J liked the purple one because it was purple. Then it got stolen and they found a yellow one (the OC44 one) at a store thinking it was the same thing. Apparently it didn’t have the same kick as the purple one. J must have found another purple ne because thats the one he’s using again.
So to answer your question, there is a difference.
February 9, 2007 at 10:51 pm #125575I’d love to check one of those out. I see a place here in Houston sells them. I’ve been switching between two Big Muffs for different sounds. I use a Russian Big Muff for rhythm, more subdued parts and a Little Big Muff with the tone at 1 o’clock, sustain pegged and volume at 50% for leads. Of course, mixed with the Russian one, it explodes. I’d love to try it with a new tube amp. I’m using a Sunn Concert Lead right now, which is solid-state, but it still sounds killer. I used to use a Double Muff…with the single setting pegged for leads, because the double setting just bogged everything down. I need to work on getting some more pedals again. My next desire is an Electric Mistress.
February 10, 2007 at 10:48 am #125576I would like an Electric Mistress too but they’re pricey. I just bought a pocket Metal Muff yesterday and man that thing kicks ass. I love it. It sounds great for rhythm, and when I want to solo I add the big muff to it and it takes it to another level. Totally awesome.
February 10, 2007 at 12:13 pm #125577For me, the Electric Mistress isn’t too bad. I use flange quite a bit. So much so, I’ve wore out 2 of the Danelectro FAB pedals since Christmas. Musiciansfriend.com went down on all their EH pedals so it’s down to $134 and will last me forever, I’m guessing. All my EH pedals have held up pretty well…except the Double Muff, but it got treated like hell for years.
I dig the new Nano pedals they’ve got. They’re a lot cheaper, more solid and do what I want. I dig the Nano Clone. It’s set about how I like it on depth and the rate is adjustable, so it’s a pretty good buy if you dig that area of depth. I remember paying $100 for digital delays in the last 90s, so it’s not too bad. I wish we’d have had all the cheap alternatives back then.
I went economy on the guitar, bought a Jagmaster and put in a GFS Dream 90 in the bridge spot, it’s pretty close to a Jazzmaster’s tone in standard settings. You don’t have the range, but after some more rewiring and customizing of the electronics in it, it’ll be pretty much the same thing at 1/3 of the price. However, on pedals, I’ve found money=quality. I try not to skimp out on pedals unless I have no alternative.

cheers for the metal muff, i want one.
February 10, 2007 at 9:17 pm #125579I got an EM. After playing with it for awhile I realized it isn’t too useful for general jamming purposes…I wrote one song using that big whoosh but after you do it once I’d feel guilty doing it again.
It’s really great when used without guitar though, for electro-oscillation jams I do with people.
