And he’s still sporting that fine, fine moustache. He’s playing in a band called Gang Font feat. Interloper, which is a freak-out instrumental jazz-rock sort of thing, kind of like some of the old SST/Black Flag/Husker instrumental stuff, but played by advanced musicians. I was impressed by how fleet-fingered Norton was, especially since he’s been spending far more time in the kitchen than with a bass for the past 20 years. Cool stuff. Definitely recommended if they decide to play out more often. I think they came to NYC mainly so Norton could check out some restaurants. Someone asked him during a break what he had for dinner, and he replied: "Started out with duck confit, then lavender-encrusted lamb chops and ’97 (something or other — I didn’t catch the wine)." Nice.

Lavender definitely has flavor — it’s a key ingredient in herbes de provence — but perhaps one not to everyone’s liking. I recently picked up a tin of lavender buds to mix my own herbes de provence, and now I think I’ll drop Norton a line and get more detail about those chops. Lamb is one of my favorite meats, and it stands up beautifully to herbs and spices.

April 28, 2007 at 4:35 pm #128247The other night I made a dijon, olive oil, garlic, and lavender sauce to go with some lamb chops I grilled. Very nice.
