Some rare guitarists are brave enough to defy the social norm of being in tune, like great social pioneers defied the norms of slavery and segregation.

anyone in particular? care to elaborate a bit? Some people pick up a guitar and it’s been thrown around here and there a bit. They pick it up and it’s out of tune, that’s when I like to play some guitars sometimes. They like to tell weird stories they never could before when they were in tune. Kevin Shields is like that too. I have a few songs where the tuning is all crazy and I only found it out by doing this. The tuning is like, D, B, C, G#, B, E. Really kool octave sounds from that. Sounds really kool.

Jandek and other "outsider musicians", are brave enough to not tune their guitars, but if they do its very unconventional. And I once heard Jesus & Mary Chain didnt tune their guitars on tour

MBV didn’t know how to tune theirs until they saw another band tuning their guitars. Also New York Dolls didn’t care about tuning. I’m guessing the first punk bands didnt know as well.

Maybe its not ‘can’t’ or ‘won’t’, but ‘don’t know how’…
