I’m going to start off by apologizing because this may be a bit long winded. Last nights show for me, was EPIC.
This was going to be a cool show because I was going with my 11 yr old son. It was going to be his first time seeing a big concert and not just his dad’s friends play at the local club. Needless to say we were both stoked. We left our house about 3:30 and arrived in Olympia about an hour later, we found parking a block away from he theater and headed straight to the back door. The back door was open and could hear Murph noodling on his drums, we sat and listened and thought maybe some of the guys would come out side. Eventually Murph popped out, we said "hello" and Murph and I talked about the show in Seattle the night before, his new drum kit, and the tour. Good news on that front, the tour has been extended through September. Murph said they keep adding dates. We hung out and talked with Murph a little while longer unil he left with the bands guitar/drum tech to go buy a bicycle. My son was like "No way we just hung out with Murph".
A few minutes later we spotted J coming down the alley. Of course my son freaks out and runs up to J to say "hello" at which point J is looking like who is this kid that all excited about saying hello. I walked up to him and said hello and that I brought my son to the show today. I told J I felt like an idiot for having asked him about playing Pick Me Up in drop d and seeing him play it with a capo on the 5th fret. He was super cool about it, and said "you know Lou could have dropped to d, I don’t know". He was really easy to talk to this time around and actually seemed like he wanted to talk with us. I asked him about his signature jazzmasters and the specs on them. He said the only difference is the bigger frets, and a TOM bridge. I asked him if Fender was going to make them a production guitar and he said he was under the impression they would be available sometime later this year. He said there is only one guy at Fender making them and he can make like 30 of them a month. J said he has like 20 of them already! On a wardrobe note J was wearing his Indian Chief shirt, still can’t wait for the Dinosaur Indian shirt.
My son was totally stoked by this point having to get to visist for a bit with J, I was on cloud nine too. At this point Lou made his way out and again my son ran up to Lou and said "hello" and immidiatly asked him to play Lightning Bulb and Mountain Man tonight. At that point Lou knew exactly who my son was. The night before when I was talking with Lou I told him my son had to do a powerpoint presentation in front of his 5th grade class. The background song he had playing during the presentation was Mountain Man. I told Lou that I was bringing my son to the show in Olympia and that he wanted to hear Mountain Man. Lou was stoked on the idea of a little kid playing Mountain Man during a class report. So upon hearing my son asking him to play those songs, he looks up and sees me. He said hello and I said this is my son I was telling you about yesterday. Lou told him they couldn’t play Lightning Bulb because they didn’t learn it, but that Mountain Man was a possibility. At this point Lou had to go back inside to sound check for his solo set.
So before the show even began my 11 year old son got to hang out and talk with all three of the guys in Dinosaur. How cool is that? We grabbed some pizza at a pizzeria a block away and got in line to see the show.
The show was tighter than last nights show in Seattle, and Lou and J rocked out quite a bit during the set. It was very cool to see. The set list was as follows:
Almost Ready
The Wagon
Been There All the Time
Back to Your Heart
Out There (which was even better than last night)
This is All I Came to Do
Feel the Pain
Pick Me Up (J played an epic solo on this one, it must have lasted about 4 minutes no sh@t)
The Lung
Little Fury Things
Bulbs of Passion
GargoyleAfter the set Dinosaur leaves the stage and comes back out for the encore. J asked the croud "what should we play?" My son and I are screaming at Lou (we stood right in ront of Lou against the stage for the show) "Mountain Man"! Lou hears us and begin to take his mic of the stand. He walked over to my son and asked "what do you want to hear?" My son screamed into the mic in front of everyone in the theater "Mountain Man"! J said "Theres one for Mountain Man". A few people over Lou put the mic in front of this girl who said "I want to suck your dick". J, Lou and Murph looked shocked for a minute then started laughing. Lou asked her "what did you say?" to which she replied ‘I want to suck your dick" J said "Uh I don’t think we know that one, Mountain Man it is!" They played it awesome and J went off again and played another amazing solo. Then they closed the night out with Freakscene and as usual the crowd went nuts.
So all in all it turned out to be quite a special day for me and my son. We had a great time. And Lou if you ever read these things, Thanks for giving my son that moment, that was totally cool of you and I appreciate it.

This has worked for me the past 4 shows.

May 23, 2007 at 7:34 am #129117Wow, the lack of old songs really surprises me. No Freak Scene? Maybe they figure everyone who wanted to see them play those songs, saw them the first time around.
That’s cool, though, I’m glad they’re having so much fun playing together now. Also, cool to hear you and your son had a great time!
May 23, 2007 at 8:03 am #129118Wow that did sound like an epic evening. I’m glad they made that happen for your son too
