Ok, so I was talking with a female friend of mine about girls in music, and she was saying that the music scene is to much dominated by the men. She started spouting names of bands like Arch Enemy and evenesscense and how their female lead singers are better then any frontMAN. I shurgged, mainly because I didn’t really care, I think those 2 bands are terrible, regardless of the sex of their singers.
Then she asked my opinion, and I said that I don’t like MOST females in a band, because a large majority of them are singers, and thats all they do… SING. if they play an instrument and sing, then I’m cool with them, such as Kim Gordon, Kim Deal, hell, Ruth Underwood made me want to play a xylophone.
But I feel this way with any band. If a band has a singer who doesn’t do anything other then just write lyrics and open his/her mouth, then that guy/girl is worthless, but will probably be the most known person in the band.
So when I told her all this, she called me a sexist, and I laughed, which really didn’t help the situation. So this is a funny story, I want to know what you guys would think…
May 27, 2007 at 7:44 pm #129415I think maybe women are underepresented.

If a singer is talented,it should`nt make a difference if they play an instrument. If they`re a lousy singer well then they probably are worthless.
May 28, 2007 at 7:32 am #129417I agree with SG….but I’m also sexist and I’m okay about that.
May 28, 2007 at 1:32 pm #129418I do think that the rock/punk/whatever music climate is definately dominated by men. At the same time I tend to like a band that has female members, because those are the people who rose above the bullshit and who really want to be there playing music.
Also I don’t think that comment makes you sexist.

I honestly love women…to look at anyway. But I’m still a firm believer that they’re crazy and not as cool, funny, clever as men. And I guess those feelings spill over into music too. *gets ready to run*

I’m going to smother you into Tori Amos’ bosom…
May 30, 2007 at 7:10 am #129421I also agree with SG – and no your comment wasn’t sexist…
If you said something like women have no place in rock, then I’d say yes, but based on what you said you said then I’d say no!

I think it’s kind of weird that you don’t see the voice as an instrument of sorts, but that’s your opinion – and you’re entitled to it…

In my mind, many a band has been made or not made b/c of their singer(s)!

Are you trying to lure me into Canada?

Repenting for our sins at the Notre-Dame Basilica…

May 31, 2007 at 11:35 am #129426I’m not sure I trust your depth perception, having one eyeball and all.
May 31, 2007 at 12:12 pm #129427I think talent is talent, it doesn’t matter if you’re male, female, or hermaphrodite. Singing is tough, if someone does it well then it should be acknowledged. Same with playing an instrument.
As far as females in rock go, I’ve always liked Ann & Nancy Wilson from Heart. Maybe its because they are locals. The Donnas are dope. I’ve always had a thing for Joan Jett too. I also like Julianna Hatfield, and Sinead O’Connor.
I see how there aren’t too many women in rock compared to men, still doesn’t mean there isn’t quality women performers out there.
