A quick mini-review of the shows this past weekend. No setlists, unfortunately, but the ones I can remember from Thursday & Saturday (didn’t go Friday) are listed below. I probably missed a few as well.

Saturday, I thought, was better than Thursday. Maybe it’s just where I was standing as the sound seemed a bit muddy on Thursday. Lou wasn’t very happy w/ the sound, either, nor J’s placement of a 2nd set of amps in the middle of the stage pointed directly up at him, kinda boxing in Lou both physically and aurally. Lou left stage rather abruptly after the main set on Thurs because of this. He had a long talk w/ Noel the sound guy afterwards.

Sat was great. EPIC solo on ‘Gargoyle’. Absolutely mindblowing. The band seemed way more into it, exchanging a few smiles throughout. Another thing I’ll add is that J’s singing was *great*, especially on Saturday. Much, much more assertive than I’ve seen in the past. He’s been working w/ a vocal coach a little bit and warming up more and it’s definitely paid dividends — "Repulsion" and "Budge" benefiting greatly. oh ! Almost forgot — there could have been a great moment if not for the lunkheaded bouncers at the Abbey — right at the start of "Chunks" (last song), a dude jumps up onstage and managed to get out "My brothers !" into the mike w/ Lou but was dragged off quickly thereafter. Lou said later that he would have loved to have him sing the whole thing himself as he seemed to be a diehard fan who showed Lou his "bad" Dinosaur tattoo earlier in the evening. I think it was version of the Green Mind cover w/ an alien head instead of the girl, I guess. Lou also said that this same guy was right up in front being repeatedly bearhugged/assaulted by his behemoth of a friend throughout the show and would give Lou this sheepish "what can I do ??" look each time it happened. I actually think I might know him as well.

Awesome Color were good — very "Detroit" proto-rock in the vein of the Stooges/MC 5, etc with a bit of typical Ecstatic Peace feedback thrown in for good measure.

Lou’s set on Saturday was ….. chaotic. He was cranky due to the chatty crowd but at least buffered it w/ some self deprecation. He initially walked off after 1.5 songs but came back and played for another 20 mins or so. The crowd was appreciative after this but he still kinda regretted playing in a market like Chicago instead of keeping his slots to where he hadn’t played before eg the crowd in Canada was positively reverent.

Anyways, here’s the list of songs I can remember. Sorry no full setlists.

      Almost Ready
      Crumble
      Pick Me Up
      Back To Your Heart
This Is All I Came To Do
      Been There All the Time
      What If I Knew

      Repulsion
      Gargoyle
      Mountain Man
      Little Fury Things
      Kracked/Sludgefeast
      The Lung
      Raisans (?)
      In a Jar
Freak Scene (nicely played in the middle of the set Thurs instead of encore)
      Budge
      Feel the Pain
      Out There
      Chunks

Don’t have a June 2nd setlist, but I remember a few we hadn’t heard the previous night: Little Fury Things, Repulsion, and Chunks.

Don’t remember all of Lou’s set, but we got some requests: Skull (my request!), Soul and Fire, Brand New Love, Magnets Coil.

All in all, a great couple of nights. I didn’t get to make the May 31st show, but 2 nights seemed like the perfect amount.

Nice to see some of those old favorites creep back into the setlists. And Crumble, too!

Yeah, the last night I was in the balcony on the right side, sitting next to the railing. After being right in front of J on Friday night, I was hoping to relax and maybe hear the vocals (I heard mostly GUITAR on friday – which was awesome).

Hey guys… I was at june 2nd and it rocked. I was wondering what the song was when J did a little diddy and then lou said ‘this next song is a pixies cover’. Was it really or were they just goofing around? I didn’t recognize the song but it was awesome so I’m not sure.

No, they didn’t play a Pixies tune. Someone yelled out "Where Is My Mind," to which J responded "That’s a Pixies song." That’s when Lou joked that the next song would be a Pixies song, but they played a tune from the new album.

                          Hey There,
I went to the show on Saturday night, and when I looked around at the crowd, I really thought people were fooling themselves. Don’t get me wrong, I am a fan, but it felt like the lyrics were pretty much non-existent??!! I felt like the basic framework for the songs was there, but why watch a show when most of the words are lost in space?? Kind of like we were just watching Mascis and co. solo all night.

Not trying to start mayhem here, I just wasn’t digging the show Sat night……

                          Interested to see more thoughts……..

j is so weird in that he leaves out random parts of vocals. although i’m quite sympathetic considering the number of effects changes and shit he has to remember.

yes, the vocals were mixed pretty low but that’s just the way they roll (to coin a hipster phrase). To be honest, J doesn’t really care much about the vocals when playing live.

you just have to stand farther back to hear the vocals really.. me id rather be blown in my face. i understand casue i dont care about vocals much in my band either.. its the music that matters. i see alot of shows where the vocals are drowned out by loudness and thats cool with me. Being loud is what matters in some bands. Some not.

he left out part of the vocals in the chorus of budge…
