Hello, I’ve been using a friend’s strat copy with my big muff and compressor in band practices and getting a much nicer sound that with my humbuckered guitars so I need to purchase one.
However, I don’t want a traditional strat, any suggestions? Would a Burns Marquee do the job?
I’m looking for Mascis style lead sound and a Velvet Underground-esque rhythm.
      Thanks.

Yeah, Humbuckers KILL Big Muffs…I felt totally ripped off after buying a Big Muff because it sounded so bad…then I got my Dream 90 in for my Jagmaster and it is my favorite fuzz now.

They make some Squire Teles that come with P-90s that are pretty fun. It all depends on available funds. They make some low-end Gibsons that have P-90s. Nothing beats a P-90 style pickup.

Sounds like a deal! My budget’s miminal, but I’ve always been a bit silly when it comes to guitars so £200-400 is probably how much extra debt I can get into. So, P90s are the way forward?

In my opinion and a lot of the people I know, yes. They’re basically overwound single coils, so they cut through and have some balls to them. It’s not muddy like a humbucker and not super thin like a normal single coil.

Look, siresofnothing, I think its best to wait and get some extra money and get a ‘real’ guitar and not a copy. Squires just keep fucking you and requiring annoying setups every week. Do what I did, stick with your strat copy, and save up for like a jazzmaster or if you really want p90’s a Epiphone/Gibson Les Paul with p90’s. Think about it, it makes sense. Save yer moneys.

I disagree…money on most guitars is just for a name or location of assembly. I mean, a Jazzmaster is the poster-guitar for the argument. You buy a $1400 guitar and INSTANTLY have to change out parts to make it functional. The bridge is horrible. It blows me away that Fender still hasn’t corrected it for the sake of "keeping true to the original."

I play a Squire Jagmaster, I set it up myself and it’s help. I changed out the humbuckers with GFS Dream 90s and it sounds killer. All together, I spent $350 to have a guitar that I would carry into any battle with me.

On the converse, I have a Squire 51 I had to change the bridge out on to get it right. The stock one was trash. But on a $100 guitar, what do you expect? Gibson makes some awesome double cutaway les pauls that comes with P-90s. They’re like $650-700. G&L makes a Jazzmaster ripoff that is nice, they’re like $450-500.

From the experience I’ve had buying guitars it’s always best to save up and get a really good guitar. I’ve had alot of guitars ranging from cheap gibson copys and squiers to usa gibsons and now vintage guitars. Ebay is the only way to get real value for money in my opinion; you can get US made fenders and gibsons cheaper than the jap model price in guitar shops. I got a US SG for £350 which is way cheaper than an epiphone copy in a guitar shop. What I really recommend though is getting hold of a vintage guitar. Not only are they superior in nearly everyway they are a great investment. They go up in price every year so it’s best to get one asap before the prices get silly. I had to save up for about a year to get my jazzmaster but it’s the best thing i’ve ever done.

In regard to the orginal question I would simply recommend a jazzmaster and not just because J uses them. They are easily the most diverse guitars I’ve ever played and i dont have a big muff or many pedals. They sound great for any style you wanna go for especially for playing chords, the only problem i get due to the low action is lack of sustain on bends. I read that this is just a problem with vintage JMs but i can’t be arsed making the action higher.

What is this G&L Jazzmaster ripoff you are talking about please? This news interests me.

I was playing with it at Guitar Center. The bridge pickup is slanted instead of straight, but they’re very similar. I’ll find the name for you….

                            In regards to price:

I’ve owned all sorts of guitars in my life. The highest end was a Rickenbacker 330 or a Parker Nightfly (couldn’t stand it…way too light) to cheesy 80s metal guitars they were giving away in pawn shops. My two guitars I use now are a Peavey T-60 and a Squire Jagmaster. Both are great guitars. The T-60 has the thin neck like and SG and good frets. You can coil tap to use single and humbucker (I never use anything but single coil).

Cost should be your least important aspect of buying a guitar. You should focus on how it feels and sounds above all other things. Some people need to have an expensive guitar to feel like they’ve got something well-made…it’s just marketing scams. Sadly, an expensive guitar will not make you sound like you know how to play if you don’t, it just makes you look nice and you can tell friends how awesome it is.

The key to enjoying guitar is to learn how to do maintenance on it and to find something that speaks to you personally and feels right.

i agree coz i use squire jagmaster too made from china,it sound good when i set it up with my sovtek muff, mxr blue box, small clone and my classic dunlop wah,

you dont have to waste your money to get the real guitar just to look nice, you just have to keep a maintanance on it,kurt cobain for example.

Exactly. They’re cool guitars and they sound killer. It really doesnt matter if J uses them or not, because most of his gear is enormous and vintage which is very expensive, so you wouldnt get his tone either way.

Anyone who can’t set up the JM stock bridge is an idiot. Yeah, it rattles, but if you set it up properly theres less chance of it rattling and half of the tone goes with its bridge, the bridge gives that jangly and surfy sound. The only problem with it that I dislike and really really dislike is that theres a lot of slapback on the strings and my low e always pops out and its out of place. oh well.
