I knew he was very ill the last few years,I heard it was Althezmers :( I heard one of his last concerts on the radio with Mal Waldron.Max was one of the pioneer of changing the direction of jazz drumming. There`s a local jazz cat named Jerry Graneli who grew up in California said in the `50s that hearing Roach immediately made him get drums and become a jazz drummer.Max was very open minded, when alot of his generation hated free jazz he did`nt.He played duets with Cecil Taylor and Anthony Braxton.
        RIP Max
