Gee, today feels like it’s going to shape up into a wonderful day in Athens, GA.
      Hmmmmmm………………………

I hope I get a cat-nap in around 4pm or so, otherwise I’m baked and ready for sleep around 10pm.

Getting older has it’s sucky side, although the positives tend to outweigh the negatives.

Enjoy the show. Say hey to Kevin and Kyle if you see them for me.
I’m ‘thinking’ of going to Dallas this weekend to see one more.

Dinosaur Jr. to play ‘loud, fuzzed out’ rock

Neil Young may be the godfather of grunge, but according to Gordon Lamb, he owes that to Dinosaur Jr.

"In the early ’90s when (Dinosaur Jr.) was so enormously huge, (bassist Lou Barlow’s) vocal style pretty much (sounded like Neil Young)," said Lamb, a columnist for Flagpole and music blogger at 24hourpartypooper.com.

Lamb said he has lived in Athens for 18 years and has been in its music scene since 1989, whether playing in bands or working at Caledonia Lounge.

Dinosaur Jr. plays tonight at the 40 Watt with Awesome Color and B-B-Q Pants.

"The first album that came out was called ‘Dinosaur,’ that’s my favorite album still," he said.

"I’ve seen Dinosaur Jr. every time they’ve been in Athens since ’92," Lamb said. "Dinosaur Jr. was the loudest band I’d ever seen until I saw My Bloody Valentine open for them. I’ve never seen them do a bad show. They’re loud and fuzzed out, and the songs just go one into the other and they just rock."

Velena Vego, booking agent for the 40 Watt, also has a long history with Dinosaur Jr.

"That (1992 show was) one of my first shows actually when I started booking the 40 Watt," she said. "It was them one night, Fugazi the next. It’s been 17 years – it’s a long relationship."

The band, having reunited its original lineup in 2005, including Barlow, guitarist J. Mascis and drummer James Murphy, now tours in support of its most recent album, "Beyond."

"Barrie Buck, who is the owner, has ("Beyond") and loves it," Vego said. "(She) has been playing it between shows, I know we’ve been playing it at the club."

Phillip Buchan, a 2006 University alumnus from LaGrange and former WUOG music director, said "Beyond" resembles Dinosaur Jr.’s early albums.

"This one sounds pretty much just like their late ’80s rock," he said. "They sound like they haven’t aged a bit in 20 years."

Vego said she expects tonight’s show to be a great example of all-out rock and roll. "It’s only a three-piece, very guitar-driven, so I’m assuming that it’s just balls to the wall there with rock," she said.
