i’m not much of a forum fan but felt the necessity to comment on this show in hopes that the band and crew read this stuff. i’m a long time fan of the band and have already seem them live 91 in axis in boston with my bloody valentine and codeine as support. that was one of the most memorable shows in my life. but i don’t want to get into any "everything was better in the old days" shit, cause the new record is great and the band played well, with the exception of a couple of old songs that weren’t very tight, but that happens.
the reason i’m writing is because of the sound. it is not my opinion that it should be necessary to wear earplugs at a show, like listed in a few other comments. if the sound is good and the volume between 105 and 110 db, then all is ok. i’m professional musician and have been making music since 1980 and hate earplugs! there aren’t any, regardless of price, that do not cut the treble and change the sound of the music. i definitely believe rock music should have certain loudness. i play alot in switzerland where the db limit is often under 100 db and it sucks. when it’s too quiet people can’t get into it.
but, this concert was simply too loud for the frequencies being produced and this was the main problem. it is my belief that the soundman cannot hear anything above 2khz anymore (or was wearing earplugs, which a soundman should not do). already the music in the pauses before the show and between the acts was poor sounding and full of high frequencies, and this was coming from cd. this at a lower volume was already annoying and i already had my fears about the show. the first tone confirmed my fears and i immediately stuffed facial tissue in my ears. i moved around the whole room and stood eventually at the mixing desk but the sound was horrible there as well.
the charm of dinosaur jr. is taking sweet harmonies and dousing them in a carpet of muff fuzz, but it was almost impossible to distinguish the melodies being whipped by a mass of high treble the entire concert.
i’ve seen quite a few shows at this venue and know even though the p.a. is old, it’s still possible to get a good sound there. so, no excuses. do something about this. get someone who can still hear to eq the p.a. or i don’t know just turn it down a few db. in any case guys, continuing to do shows like this one is bordering on the grounds of bodily assault.
May 22, 2008 at 7:42 am #133266I liked this show a lot. Yes, it was very loud, but to me only J’s guitar was a bit too loud. The band was great. Very heavy, very loud. By the way, could someone please post a setlist?
May 22, 2008 at 8:44 am #133267Just got back from Hamburg…
Here’s the setlist:
Tarpit
Been There All The Time
No Bones
Lightning Bulb
Little Fury Things
Out There
Feel The Pain
Crumble
Pick Me Up
The Wagon
Freak Scene
Gargoyle (6+ minutes !)
– encores:
In A Jar
Mountain ManSo… after a "standard" show in Cologne I think Hamburg was one of the best Dinosaur shows I’ve seen. And probably the loudest !!! Which is a surprise, because I really had the feeling that they turned down the volume at many of the recent shows that I got to see in 2007 and since Ajay stopped doing the sound for the band… Anyways, awesome setlist, awesome playing, and the venue is a good one, sort of like a small indoor amphitheatre that holds about 1000 people. However, I must confirm that it was actually too loud and the sound was awful – believe me, this was my 16th Dino show and I know what the band usually sound like- this wasn’t the standard "Dinosaur loudness", it went far beyond that ! Everything was clipping and distorting like crazy, except for the vocals and cymbals – the volume was turned up even more for Freak Scene and the following songs and EVERYTHING was just a loud, fuzzy audio mess – when I walked out of the venue and took out my earplugs I noticed that the hearing on my right ear was pretty muffled… AND the band did have problems with the mics feeding back as soon as they walked onto the stage… Man, when Ajay was still doing sound for the band things sounded so much better… oh well, that’s what I think (I’m half deaf anyway
). Lou gave up singing and playing his bass for a brief moment during "Lightning Bulb" after he mixed up the words during the 2nd verse, and it looked as if he actually wanted to stop the song… he seemed pretty moody throughout the show. Anyways, I enjoyed this show a lot more than the Cologne gig the previous night – the setlist was much better and the 6+ minutes version of Gargoyle with some awesome jamming made it worth the trip. Off to the Munich show tomorrow…

Totally agree.
Though I have to say, awful sound or not, I am kind of happy to hear that they’re still occasionally playing a ‘too loud’ gig. The only show I’ve seen during the reunion (out of 12) that verged on ‘too loud’ was the Toad’s show, the night after they had their stuff stolen. I had seen them the night before in Brooklyn, which was a great show, but it was approximately half as loud as the Toad’s gig. The sound at Toad’s was great, though. Just pulverizing on top of sounding good.

June 21, 2008 at 3:21 pm #133271I just checked the blog yesterday and a whole bunch of stuff has been added since this thread started. It’s definitely worth a look. The guys actually look happy, and even chummy, in some of the photos!
June 22, 2008 at 4:13 am #133272Noel’s blog is a trip I like the picture of J near the ice cream stand. J thinks he’s not feeling that well as to be copying their own cover art in that one pic. I had my own trouble with Clithotox’s writing where I thought the only way to be original was to brazenly copy. You can beat it J!
