I’m super psyched about the show next week. I was out of town the last time they came through DFW and missed the show, so this is great. Anyone else here going? After listening to the recordings of their recent shows I’m really looking forward to it, I only wish I had the proper recording equipment… The Granada should be a good venue for them.
I might be a new poster here, but I’m a looong time dinosaur jr/j mascis fan, I’ve always loved this stuff. And like many others, his guitar work was the best motivation for me to pick up a guitar myself.
October 16, 2009 at 8:25 am #136851I don’t live anywhere near Texas I just wanted to share in your enthusiam and charge you to get back here and tell us about the show. I saw them in Philly and they were great. J sounds the best I’ve ever heard him and Lou and Murph are really rockin’ it too! Have fun at the show!

SludgefeastThe show was awesome! J seemed to be in a groove and played with "Mascis Enthusiasm", shredding his Jazzmasters the whole show. He’s taller in person than I somehow imagined, he has a large presence on stage. It was really cool to see the techs wheeling out the Marshall stacks and hearing the people around us saying ‘wooow’ and asking where we got our earplugs.
I love that beat-up old Marshall J uses. He rotated in a swaying motion during most of the non-solo parts of the songs, singing with his eyes closed while Lou banged on the bass with large arm swings right next to Murph’s close-knit drumset. Lou was his usual awesome (he and the missingmen were really great) and Murph was right on the whole time too. They had no encore because, strange to me, they played before Built to Spill did… I was a little bummed about that. Sludgefest started off a little odd, it looked like they had to decide on what to play for the last song and it almost looked like there was either a little disagreement, or someone needed to be reminded of how to start the song off… not sure exactly what was going on, Murph and Lou were playing the opening parts a couple of times before they actually got going.
The solo on Get Me was the most faithful to the studio album that I’ve heard him play live and overall the solos were amazing like you would expect. I loved Raisans and the band seemed to really enjoy playing Feel the Pain, that was great. J broke a string once and picked up his JM Jazzmaster that was sitting next to the stack to finish off one of the songs (need to check my videos to remember which). The crowd was good, everyone was engaged and cheering. There were a few guys who decided to do a little moshing next to me and that messed up a couple of my videos until we moved over some, but I have videos for almost the whole show. The Granada will be posting photos themselves as well, and maybe some videos also, like they do with all their shows.
And I managed to get a photo with Lou after the show. He was very cool and nice.
I’d wanted to see them play live for a very very long time and missed them before, so this was really great to be able to see them this time around. Just wish I could travel and see them at the following shows.
I’ll add photos when I get them ready.
