I second that, it’s nice that that sweeny has taken the time to explain these guitar set up things. Also
for fans it’s nice when we get to read something else about this tour other than a "set list". I am not the least bit curious about guitar pedals but it’s interesting for me to read the questions as they are posed and the return answers. While the theft of the J’s property sucks, hearing the details from Kevin, gives us a "inside" feel to the event. In fact, reading the earlier post, in my mind, I thought this theft had happened during the last song or something like that, but it seems that this took place after the show was over. May this bespectacled pixie shirted fellow get his just desserts karma as soon as possible.June 7, 2006 at 10:42 am #118088Darren and RST- you seem to know better than I do, I’m not even sure if J knows about this difference. We just came across the yellow pedal so he bought it. The purple one definitely had an edge that we both liked better, I just assumed it was the luck of the draw, or J’s preference for purple, but apparently it’s more scientific. Thanks for the info.
Someone mentioned that J should mount it in his rack to avoid future theft, but I think there’s something about it running into the rack, overriding everthing else, that helps give it the edge. He uses it on most solos, you can hear it kick on adding a treble "sizzle" and a bit more distortion rather than a volume boost. It’s an impressive pedal.
The only other HBE pedal I’m familiar with is the ironically named "Big D" distortion that Schools used for some of the Fog shows. That was his favorite until he came across the one knob Interstellar Overdriver. I can’t recall who makes that.
Thanks again for the info, I’ll pass it on to J in case he’s unaware.
June 7, 2006 at 2:37 pm #118089Quote:J used his Jazzmasters or [glow=red,2,300]Rory Gallagher [/glow] StratHey Sweeney does J just like this Strat or is he a fan of Rory Gallagher? That guitar is pretty pricey. Just curious.
June 7, 2006 at 3:20 pm #118090Quote:Sweeney-The guy who stole the Germania was right up front all night, he was wearing a Pixies shirt. His glasses flew off at one point during the show and they landed onstage. I went out and got them while the band was playing and handed them back to him. When the show was over I went out and grabbed the two guitars and by the time I came back from behind the amps the Germania was gone. It was a very small venue and the pedals were obviously right up front. Some guy told me the Pixies shirt guy had taken it. That’s what I get for being nice to him. Luckilly J had a backup but it didn’t sound as good and wasn’t purple.dirty so & so, some people just suck

Thanks again for all you help here, appreciate it
June 7, 2006 at 4:38 pm #118091I’ve got an radio interview with J from around 1995 where J mentions buying some 7” singles by the band Taste which is a band Rory Gallagher used to play in, so I guess he is a fan of his guitar playing as well as his Strat
June 7, 2006 at 6:40 pm #118092He’s a massive Rory fan.
June 7, 2006 at 7:11 pm #118093Oh, no, I’m feeling myself going off on a Kevin Sweeny thing again,
I do believe that his birthday was like yesterday, today, or tomorrow,
I’m not kidding, I can’t remember exactly, but I think it’s very near.I would throw a happy birthday post under open topic,
but when it comes to Kevin Sweeny, my batting average isn’t so good. :-Another billion dollar question for Sweeny, In what city will you/did you spend your birthday?
Was it just another day, or interesting?June 20, 2006 at 12:00 pm #118094and what about budda wah, superfuzz or scrambler?
I read in some J interview that he used budda wah and lovetone pedals DR strings (10), and I think I can hear a superfuzz and scrambler on some dinosaur tracks…is this true or what???
superfuzz+bigmuff iz also great combination([also for solos] I can get J type of sound with this combo), I suppose it is similar to germania+bigmuff…
sorry, but I don’t have a billion dollars to offer for the answer
June 20, 2006 at 12:21 pm #118095I’ve read that J has a Budda wah and likes it, though this could just be because it’s purple !….maybe it’s just part of his gear collection or maybe he uses it for recording ?
J used a Superfuzz in his live rig from around 1993 (possibly earlier) probably up until when Dinosaur called it quits in 1997, could have been used during the recording of all the Dinosaur albums, except the first one. The Lovetone pedals were used in his live rig from around the time of the Hand It Over album. He has also used them in the studio from around this time + on the J + the Fog albums
never heard of J using an Ampeg Scrambler but he probably has one at home as he loves his pedals !

it just sounds like a scrambler to me…July 12, 2006 at 6:39 pm #118097hey just wondering what marshall half stacks does j use now
like are they the 1960s or jmp 900s? cause ive seen some pics of them with the little golden plate on the bottom right of the grill cloth.

it just sounds like a scrambler to me…I pretty sure its just J shaking an amp with a spring reverb. If you have an amp with one try it, it sounds rad.
