My uncle has never been to war. He just recruits other young men and women to go over there. I know he doesn’t make much, but they could be broke due to their many kids and one-income household.

A lot of poor kids in our country get suckered into joining because of the promise of "free education" but the rules are very, very sneaky and dirty (and often not adequately disclosed). Our government doesn’t give a shit about screwing the working class and the poor, as evidenced by both domestic and international practices. Domestically there are very few resources for the poor, and people like my mom (a social worker) who do the most important social work are scantly rewarded– the government has zero empathy for the poor and therefore doesn’t recognize the importance of supporting social programs. Internationally we send our poorest, most vulnerable, and least intelligent (NOT necessarily one and the same) children to die in war. As a friend of mine once said, it’s our peasants killing their peasants.

I think class warfare and ethnic warfare are the two most important crises roiling about in the U.S. Eventually people are not going to tolerate the way money and privilege are condensed at the top of the economic food chain, and things might very well combust.

This thread really is conducive to tangential madness, sorry :-X

I spent my 12 months way up north in the special forces. Most of the time I was inside a tank. More than anything else it was like a boys club on a field trip, except that we lived in 40 ton of armored steel and rarely ate or slept.

Hehe, I remember tanks. We had a "lazer-war" against them in december… They are quite scary when the ground shakes etc. After that we got to get up on the tanks and test how it is being up there when it drives at full speed. That was cool! :D

"Assholes in charge", I agree with you on that. I noticed that the people on highest positions, the people I never saw, were quite nice, but the ‘little bosses’ I had to work with every day were assholes.

The Finnish army uniforms(marine) are ugly and I feel sorry for everyone that is forced to wear them… Now, I have joined myspace.com and uploaded a picture there, http://www.myspace.com/sotaavaan. I should get a real ftp-server or something where to upload files. Btw, what’s the deal with this myspace? Already got some random friend, wtf….? :D

I’m happy that there wasn’t enough snow to do that skiing… The skiis are terrible, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were from the second WW. You use rubber shoes with them. I’m sure they aren’t the most comfortable shoes for skiing.. :D

Hmm.. That’s sick. Actually I got to pay for a hat and a pair of gloves that got stolen from me in the army. They weren’t expensive, but I hated to pay for The Defence Forces which first forced me to army and to have responsibilty of stuff that didn’t belong to me

It isn’t fair when people who got no money have to go to war if they wan’t to study. In Finland we got ‘almost free’ education, which isn’t perfect but quite good. Otherwise I probably couldn’t afford my studies.

I asked about the wages for soldiers in USA(or anywhere else, Sweden or Norway?). I meant conscripts/recruits. Does anyone know?

My cousin, her boyfriend, and her best friend all used the marines to pay for college, it worked out for them as far as financing school goes.

I know another guy who was let go from the reserve for smoking pot. He didn’t have to pay back anything, but lost any future school funding.

Her boyfriend spent time in Iraq in the well known (for those of us in the states) Lima Co. which was dessimated. Her friend was an MP also in Iraq. Not sure how much it paid each, but all left the marines for better paying jobs once their time was up. I’ll have to ask.

A friend of mine has a sister flying C-130’s in Germany. She lives on the base and has free room and board. She just bought herself a brand new upper-end BMW. Not sure what she makes, but no bills certainly helps.

It seems to be vary dependant on rank, position, etc.

I’ll ask next time I see any of them.

I know a few guys who aren’t even officers and they can afford brand new houses out here. They get an off base housing allowance that pays for the bulk of their house payment. I’m sure it must work the same for over there. Weird. :-

Well, from what I can gather and notice many, many military families are in credit card debt up to their gills (like many Americans) but they tend to be in worse shape because of the income level.

An average enlisted person can’t drive an upper-end BMW and live in a larger house off of base with out putting themselves into heavy debt………………….Many, many folks are driving in fancy cars and living in large houses but until your house is paid off, and until your car is paid off, you don’t own it man!!! The bank owns it.

and as I have mentioned here before, even when your house is paid off, you still have to pay taxes on the property…………..that still gets me a little pissed off but…

When I was in the army we trained a group of marines from the special forces stationed at Keflavik, Iceland, in how to survive and fight in the snow. If I remember correctly their officers had ok wages, but the sergeants and privates made close to nothing.

Hey, thought I would share with Freakscene, we got an e-mail from my husbands brother today.
This is his third time going to Iraq. He is so independent, self-contained…I don’t know, he is a Sagittarius and he has never asked that we write him so this is unusual and makes us feel a little scared……although we usually send care packages, this letter gives you a feel of what it is like for him now there.

I’m here for 12 months but with luck the time will be shorter. Greetings to everyone, what I need are your letters because they have everything else here that I might need. Mama has my address, I hope she didn’t misplace it.

My husband’s brother is coming home from his Marine training in San Diego at the end of next month. He’ll be home for ten months, at which time he’ll be getting married and going on a honeymoon. When he gets back, he will be off to Iraq.

It’s sad.. My mother-in-law actually believed that he would be exempt from going to the desert since he trained to work as a mechanic on amphibious and water-transportation vehicles.. Never deny their power of wishful thinking.

I don’t have an army jacket and it is quite hard to steal one. So the only way for you to get a jacket is to buy one from internet. There is a shop that sells official army clothing through their webpage. The jacket you mean is probably the m91 that I’m wearing on the picture. You can buy one like that only including pants and that makes 155€(196,45 USD) +shipping. To me it sounds quite expensive, but if you want I can translate the page to you for ordering and other info.

Yepp, Scandinavia is expensive. Taxes everywhere. But when one is used to scandinavia, it is cheap almost everywhere else.
I’ve seen pictures of mardis gras. People playing trumpets etc, right? I read somewhere that it was hard to organize after the hurricane. How is it in New Orleans nowadays?

I’ve been out of army since 4 weeks, yeeeehaaw! :D Actually I think life is much harder outside the army. In army I hadn’t think too much myself, just followed orders. Safe and easy. Hehe..
