      Hi,

This is my first time posting, although I have lurked for quite some time. I was able to go to the Atlanta show at Old Smith’s Bar last night and it was a really good show (i have seen J 3 times and it has never been anything less). As soon as I heard he was playing at Old smith’s I could not believe it because it is such a tiny venue. It holds 350 people max I think.

I was quite pleased I could hear J singing this time. The last show I went to in Athens earlier this year I really could not hear his vocals well at all. His band is great I forget the drummers name but he is absolutely incredible and adds a lot to the music. The guys seem to enjoy playing together. J was on fire all night with face melting after face melting guitar solo.

Ammaring was really good a nice little extended guitar intro and a great lengthy solo in the middle. A good mix of old and new songs I’m sorry i can not compile a set list but it was similar to the set he played when i saw him in athens. Alone was great it was about 11 minutes long. He came out and played the wagon and sludgefest for an encore (i think it was just two sorry i could be wrong) both songs really got the crowd going.

The only bad thing I could think of to say is he did not play thumb, which is okay i’ve heard it a couple times live before.

It was a really cool show if he is coming anywhere near you go check him out you will not be disappointed.

The show was taped, and I think i saw someone with a video camera too

The person with the video camera got shut down after a few songs. (I think mainly just cuz he didn’t clear it ahead of time.)

The show was superb though. I also could not believe it was going to be at Smith’s when it was announced. Real tiny place that always tends to have terrific sound, this time aided by a good soundman (who is also a great guitar player.)

The encore was just two songs, Wagon and Sludgefeast. The Sludgefeast just blew me away (literally, as I was standing right in front of J for the the last half of the show). They really have this one down now. Overall, with every song, there was such a huge improvement from the first show of the summer tour that I was at (the 40 Watt show in Athens). You could definitely see more cohesiveness and a natural chemistry.

Other songs that I can remember right now were-
Budge!, Everybody Let’s Me Down, Ammaring, yes- a 10 minute Alone that was fantastic, Sameday, Freedom (this song is perfect for Dave’s playing), Get Me, I think we heard If That’s How It’s Gotta Be, they opened with The Lung.

There were others but I’m going on little sleep and ringing ears. They did play a song they had yet to play but I can’t remember what it was this morning. Anyway, if you live on the East Coast, don’t miss a show.

The audio bit torrent of this show will follow within the next couple of days….

Oh, forgot to answer this. His name is Kyle Spence and yes, he’s quite amazing. I’m not sure how he can bang that hard. His other band is called The Tom Collins and they are a true power trio. http://www.thetomcollins.com

Intodeep, I had the same problem at the 40 watt show, I was standing front and center between Dave and J. Two feet from the stage. I keep tugging on my husbands shirt and screaming " I CAN’T hear J’s vocal" as if he needed to do something about it. Twice or so he turned me around so I was facing the front door of the club and pointed and gestered for me to move way back and over to the side. "You can hear the vocals just fine back there" but I didn’t want to move. So I got a lot of guitar.

annastefka i must have been very close to you because i was in the same place. It was really funny/cool because a couple songs in at the 40 Watt show a guy yelled up to J and said J we can’t hear you! J’s response was its okay i can’t hear myself either.

I thought that was classic. :D

I’m listening to it now too. It does sound good. Sloan mixed the soundboard tape with his audience tape and it captures the vocals nicely. I’ll pass along the thanks to him. Hope y’all enjoy…

It was a really amazing show. I would download it but I still have no idea what the hell I’m doing with FLAC files. The new band sounds like they’ve really gelled. The sound in the club was really good too. Smith’s is tiny! Here’s how tiny… There must be no backstage bathroom because during the opening act, J got in line for the bathroom behind me! I couldn’t bring myself to bother someone waiting for the bathroom, plus I was a little starstruck so I didn’t say anything. Good times…

it must be pretty trippy to be singing, but to not be able to hear yourself … i think mike watt mentioned this a few times in his tour diaries …

too bad, the video recording didn’t work out, but great to hear that there is a good audio recording available :D :!:
thanks a lot guys for making it available, I’ll listen to it as soon as possible (…wishing once more, J came to Europe)

sewersofmars, FLAC is a lossless format for audio files (other than mp3, where quality is lost through compression). you can easily listen to FLAC files with winamp player, if you d/l the plugin for FLAC on freesofree.net.

For listening and burning, you can find some useful tools here: sourceforge.net

Thanks for the info! One of my friends finally gave up on me figuring it all out for myself and he gave me a tutorial on what to download and in what order etc.

What a great recording! I remember when I used to pay a lot of money for stuff like this… and it wasn’t that long ago!
