Hello…I’ve been a Dino/Mascis fan for probably fifteen years. I just got around to finding you guys, and I wanted to tell you what a great community you have.

I have a recording studio here in AZ…not a plug for business or anything – I just wanted to share with you guys the fact that we just bought the Neve mixing board that used to be at Fort Apache, which is of course the desk which Bug and a lot of Green Mind were done on, as well as a bunch of other b-sides and stuff. I bought the board because the broker who was selling it had had the board for two years or so, and they were about to part it out on eBay…my sentimental attachment to Dinosaur Jr specifically is pretty much the reason I chose that board over some others.

We just got it in and it’s being disassembled for restoration, because it hadn’t been used in a while. You can see a photo of it on the studio site, which is:

      http://www.flyingblanket.com

If you go to the gear section, then scroll down to the Neve 8078 console, and click on it, some photos of it will come up.

Anyway…maybe not too exciting of a story, but…well, I thought it was cool.

      Um, your community is awesome.

Cool story! I’m a sucker for collecting things and sentimental attachments so I think the fact that you bought this board is awesome. Welcome to Freak Scene, hopefully we’ll hear from you often.

Thanks! Hopefully I can be a useful contributor from time to time. I posted a bunch of stuff I’m looking for in the mp3 trading section, but if anyone’s interested in any of the stuff I’ve got, I’ll gladly share. I just found an old box of 7"s that had two weird Peel Sessions bootlegs, both of which I can’t find any reference to on either Keeblin or SeveredLips. I’m going to transfer them to CD this afternoon.

Hmmm…what else do I have to share? I managed to grab Lou’s cheatsheet for the lyrics to ‘Forget the Swan’ at Spaceland…I can definitely say that every guess I ever made at the lyrics was way off-base.

some nice and interesting stories, indeed!

…the Forget The Swan lyrics! …would you mind posting them here?

They do fly at dawn right? :D

yep, they do fly at dawn. check it out:

                    foraging through the uppings
a look a brick my head swings down
and where have all the innards gone
the shell is crumbling to fix my frown
despair where we can leave in undulation
and stepping on these pieces of pain brings a smirk
a ray trickles through to singe my eyes
and shades know where the heartache will lurk

                    drifting among this rubble
i guess the waiting wished i would
but i found a box untampered and true
the day has shown it understood

Forget the swan, the dreams are gone
The pain goes on, they fly at dawn

That’s all that’s on the sheet I got. There is a (2) at the bottom of the page, but these are the only lyrics that he used. By the way, Lou was also looking for the lyrics to another song later, and he thought I had them because I had these…but those other lyrics were never there. Believe me, I was dead center in front of the stage, and he never put any other papers down there besides his setlist. I can’t remember what it was. I guess I could listen to the Spaceland mp3s and find out…

I also got the string that J broke during the last song. It’s kind of lame to be so starstruck…but I’ve been a fan since Bug, and I only ever got to see them once, opening for Neil Young in Pittsburgh, PA, and that was from a million miles away because tickets were expensive and I was a poor kid. I did get to see the Fog in Tempe more recently…every time J went to do a solo, he’d turn on a pedal and he’d lose power on his whole side of the stage. I was cheated out of several solos that way…

You got the right part of Canada I`m from  I would`nt say I`m a fan of Plaskett/Thrush Hermit but yeah Thrush Hermit brings back some memories of the local scene :) I don`t follow it as much as I used to but those guys did good back in the day(they opened for a Guided By Voices tour in `95).Cool that someone in Arizona likes `em :)
By the way I love Giant Sand and the Meat Puppets 8)

I know both Giant Sand the Puppets, but I’ve only been in AZ for about ten years, so both are a little outside my timeline. People keep telling me I should check them out, so I probably ought to…

I was a big Hermit fan, and I love Joel’s new stuff, too. I actually engineered and produced Plaskett’s new record – he did it at my studio (well, I offered to let him use the studio for free because I was such a fan, and we ended up getting along quite well). I like Al Tuck a lot, too…his new record is quite, quite good, I think. I’m into certain eras of the Superfriendz, too.

I just visited Halifax for the first time this last New Year’s. You got some beautiful country up there. Plus, you get to watch Trailer Park Boys on TV. I have to wait for the DVDs.

Flying Cloud, I’m happy to share. J’s lyrical style changed quite a bit over the years, eh? I can’t imagine lyrics like that on Hand It Over or Without a Sound…

Hi havershaw, welcome on board, cool story about the Fort Apache mixing board…. 8)

Giant Sand is still around & active, actually GS’s Howe Gelb is one of the nicest & most friendly guys I’ve ever met, it’s definitely worth checking out some of their stuff…..

Giant Sand has plenty of good music, try the albums Ramp(1991),Glum(1994),The Love Songs(1988),and Center Of The Universe(1992).
The Meat Puppets are more well known thanks to Nirvana and other bands.Try the albums Meat Puppets 2 and Up On The Sun which are some of the best indie music from the `80s.

Al Tuck has been around a long time,he knows his stuff in old country and blues music. He`s kinda like Halifax`s Vic Chesnutt(he even opened for Vic once)
The Superfriendz were a good band,Matt used to do a country music show on the local college station in his alter ego Lil Orton Hoggit :) he can do a good fake southern accent.
